My invention relates to improvements in suppositories, and has for its object to provide a soluble suppository having an expansible base for use in the local treatment of disease and the process of manufacturing the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical midsection of'a suppository embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the spongy base employed in my invention.
The base 3 is of spongy material, being elastic, compressible, and porous and shaped substantially as shown in Fig. 2. Such base is antiseptically treated and compressed by hand or by machine to the form indicated by the numeral 4 in Fig. 1. Any medical ingredients desired are incorporated in a mass of cocoa-butter or like soluble vehicle, which is then molded to the desired shape about and inclosing the compressed base 4, forming the covering 5. The suppository thus formed is provided with a cord 6, which is attached to the compressed base.
The mode of operation of the suppository is as follows: Being placed in position in the vagina the covering 5 is gradually dissolved by the heatand moisture thereof, and the medi-' cal ingredients deposited upon the walls of the vaginaby the progress of dissolution. When the dissolution of the covering 5 has proceeded to a point'wherethe base 4 is exposed, the base 4 gradually becomes moistened and expands, separating the walls of the vagina and retaining the medical ingredients in place. When the medical ingredients have been sufiiciently absorbed by the body of the patient, the base 4 is removed by means of the cord 6. During the operation of the suppository, as above indicated, the medical ingredients contained in the mass of cocoa-butter are released by the heat of the adjacent parts of the patient and the medicines are drawn to the diseased parts, while the discharges, if any, are absorbed by the sponge. The sponge expanding serves to drain and clear the Walls to which it is applied as well as to retain the medicine in place as long as the suppository is retained. The suppository thus produced is, when not in use, practically moisture and damp proof, the soluble coverin 5 serving the dual purpose of a vehicle'for t e medical ingredients and a protection of the compressed spongy base.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is
The combination with a compressed expansive porous body and a cord secured thereto, of a solid homogeneous protective shell of medicated composition which entirely incloses and seals the expansive porous bod and a portion of the cord which joins with said porous body, and which protective shell is fusible at the temperature of the body; substantially as specified.
