Be it known that I, MARGERET A. BRUN- NER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Umbrella Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to umbrellas; and the object is to provide means for preventing their loss by being left in cars and other places.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective showing the handle of an umbrella to which my invention has been applied, and Fig. 2 is a central section through a tassel and illustrating the manner in which the invention operates.

Before proceeding to a detailed description of the parts it should facilitate the disclosure to state that the invention is intended to operate to remind a person about to forget an umbrella of the umbrellas presence, to the end that the umbrella will then be carried and its loss prevented. The means by which this result is accomplished consists, substantially, in providing an attachment, preferably near the handle, which enables the umbrella to be connected to a portion of the garment of the person carrying the umbrella. In this way if the umbrella is apt to be forgotten as a person rises from his seat or moves from his position the umbrella will make its presence felt and remind the negligent person that he is forgetting it.

To refer more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the handle of an umbrella of any kind or construction. In applying my invention I prefer to use a cord 2 of a common form, which is attached to the staff 3 of the umbrella near its connection with the handle. This cord is preferably provided at its extremity with an ornamental tassel 4, the construction of which is shown very clearly in. Fig. 2. It comprises a body 5 of a common form provided with a central bore 6;

Within this bore 6 a claw 7 is mounted, the same having a body 8, which projects beyond one extremity of the body and is provided with an eye 9, receiving the cord 2, as indicated. The extremity of the claw remote from the eye 9 is formed into a pair of oppositely-disposed fingers or forks 10, and these terminate in oppositely-disposed inwardlyprojecting teeth or nibs 11. The body 5 of the tassel consists of a block enveloped in a coarse woven covering 12, and from one side of the body the usual streamers 13 or tasselcords extend. These cords 13 completely surround and inclose the forks 10, so that to all appearances the tassel is the same as the ornamental tassels often found attached to umbrellas.

As indicated in Fig. 2, the bodies of the forks 10 diverge or incline outwardly from their point of connection with the body 8 in such a manner that if the body 5 of the tassel is moved longitudinally in the direction of the hooks it will operate to force these hooks together in such a manner that they could be-made to grasp a fabric, such as a portion of a garment 14, thrust between them. In full lines the body 5 is shown in the position which it would occupy when the forks 10 hold themselves apart, it being understood, that the material out of which the claw is formed is resilient.

In using the device the umbrella is stood near the person or the individual carrying the same, and a portion of his garment at a convenient point is placed between the points 11, whereupon the body 5 of the tassel is slid in the direction to lock the claw to the garment. Now if the person rises without noticing the umbrella it will tug at the garment as he moves, and he will be apprised of the fact that he is forgetting it.

Evidently this device constitutes a simple means for preventing the forgetting of an umbrella in being carried, as in a car or similar place.

Attention is called to the fact again that there is nothing unsightly in the appearance of an umbrella when provided with this de vice, as it has substantially the same appearance as an ordinary umbrella-tassel.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent to with a tassel, said An umbrella having a cord attached theretassel having a body 5 with streamers extending therefrom, and a fastening device passing through said body and concealed by said streamers.
