Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JERvrs R. HARBECK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Container-Top, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sifters for container tops and closures 5 and the object of this improvement is to provide an article of this kind that shall be permanent, easily and cheaply constructed, and that will not permit the escape of any of the material in the container until the movable portion of the sifter has been moved to discharging position. I attain this object by the construction shown in the accompanying-drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan of the top or closure portion of the sifter. Fig. 2 is a plan of the closing-plate or movable portion of the sifter. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan of the sifter assembled. Figs. 5 and 6 are cross-sections of two forms of containers provided with my improved sifters, the bodies of the containers being largely in cross-section. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail of Fig. 6.

Container-tops provided with sifters are usually constructed with a revoluble plate secured to the main portion of the top by means of a rivet that acts as the pivot for the plate. The cost of the labor required to assemble the parts is often the greater portion of the expense in making the top. Because of the necessarily small size of the rivet the movable plate soon wears loose, permitting the escape of the contents of the container. My invention dispenses with the rivet and the labor required to place such a small element into its necessarily small apertures and irsead provides parts that are easily han- In the drawings the body of the container l has secured to it the bottom 2. Another form of top or closure is shown in Fig. 6 and consists of the annular top portion 11, having an upturned circular iiange 12, over which the iiange of the cap 13 iits very tightly. This cap is formed similar to the perforated raised portion 4, described above, as is also the disk 7, having perforations 8 and tongues 9. Y
As the tongues are bent down onto the surface of the raised portion of the closure, they hold the disk very tightly against the inner face of the closure, thus preventing the escape of any of the material in the container. The corners of the tongues are bent down to avoid the danger of cutting the fingers of the person using the sifter.
Having now explained my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a top for containers, a raised portion provided with perforations and segmental slots a short distance from its periphery, in combination with a circular perforated plate adapted to fit within the raised portion and having upturned tongues a short distance from its edge, said tongues being curved to fit said segmental slots and passing through the same being bent downward and outward, projecting beyond the raised portion of the top and adapted to hold the plate tightly against the top. y
