Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES W. MoKEEvnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flemington, in the county of Taylor and State of Vest Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in l/Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combination nut and pipe wrench, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple and inexpensive device of this character in which the gripping-jaws may be readily clamped in engaging position and one in which the jaws will be moved automatically to open position for en- I 5 gagement with the nut or pipe.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this type with a tang to be received by a brace or the like and to be further utilized as a screw-driver.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fullyhereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wrench embodying 2 5 the invention. Fig. 2 is a side sectional elevation of the wrench, the section being taken centrally and longitudinally thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate like parts throughout the several views, 1 designates the body or shank of the wrench terminating at oneend in a fixed gripping-jaw 2 and at its other end in a reduced portion or section 3,
preferably of rectangular form in cross-section and designed for engagement by a brace or other operating member, said section 3 being sharpened, as at 4, for engagement with a 4 screw, while the jaw 2 has its inner face notched or recessed, as at 5, for engagement with a nut and concaved between its ends, as at 6, for engagement with a pipe.
Formed in the body 1 of the tool and extending longitudially thereof is a laterallyopening socket or recess 7, in which is seated the reduced portion or shank 8 of a movable gripping-jaw 9, pivoted, as at 10, upon a transverse pintle or axle disposed adjacent the in- 5 ner terminal of the shank 8, whereby the jaw 9 may swing toward and from the relatively fixed jaw 2, it being noted that the jaw 9 has its inner face concaved, as at 11, in like manner to the jaw 2 and provided with transversely-extending teeth or serrations 12 for engagement with a pipe, and, furthermore, is recessed, as at 13, for engagement with a nut or the like.
Disposed within the recess 7 between the shanks 1 and 8 of the gripping-jaws is a leafspring 1 1, secured in place by a rivet or other fastening member 15 and acting to normally move the jaws to open position, there being slidably disposed upon the body of the tool a compression member or sleeve 16, which when moved forwardly toward the jaws serves to close the latter against the action of the spring.
In practice when the member or sleeve 16 is moved toward the rear end of the shank 1 the jaws 2 and 9 open automatically under the influence of the spring 14, thereby permitting engagement with the nut or pipe and after such engagement are securely fixed in engaging position by forward movement of the sleeve 16, as heretofore explained. It
will be observed that the reduced portion or section 3 of the shank performs the twofold function of a screw-driver and as a tang to be engaged by a brace.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a simple inexpensive device which may be readily manipulated and one which in practice will securely clamp upon a nut or pipe for action thereon, it being understood that slight changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, a pair of relatively movable jaws provided with shanks, one of said shanks having a longitudinally-extending recess for the reception of the other, a spring disposed within the recess between the shanks and adapted for moving the jaws to open position, and a sleeve arranged for sliding movement longitudinally of the shanks and operable for closing the jaws against the action of the spring.
