Application filed July 29, 1904. Serial No. 218,712.
- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT M. VAN lins- KIRK, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'llipton, in the county of 'lipton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Catch-Basin Top, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in catch-basin tops.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of catch-basin tops and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive one adapted to collect the trash to prevent the same from either accumulating in the gutter or passing into the catclvbasin, whereby the removal of trash and other accrunulations is greatly facilitated.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a catch-basin top constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a catch-basin. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a catcl1-basin top. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 4; is a detail sectional view illustrating the manner of securing the inclined pins to the lid.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the ligu res of the drawings.
1 designates a catch-basin top, consisting of a plate or casting of substantial oblong shape, rounded at the inner end 2 in the usual manner; but the form of the catch-basin top may be varied as desired, as will be readily understood. The catch-basin top, which is designed to cover a catch-basin 3 in the usual manner, is provided with an opening 1-, receiving a removable lid 5., which has its upper face flush with the upper face of the catch-basin top and which is adapted to be detached to itlli Ol'tl access to the catch-basin and to a trash-box 5" for enabling the trash and other accrunulation to be removed when it is desired to clean out the catclrbasin. The catchbasin top is recessed at its upper face at the opening @l to provide a supporting-llange 6, and the lid is correspondingly recessed at its lower face to provide a projecting '[lange '7, which is arranged on the supporting llange when the lid is in position, as clearly illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings.
The trash-box, which preferably consists of a casting, is arranged beneath the front or outer portion of the catch-basin top, and it extends entirely across the same, as clearly shown in Figs. Qand 3 of the drawings. The end walls 8 of the trash-box are provided at their outer edges with inwardly-extending flanges 9, which may extend from the front to the back of the box or be arranged at intervals to provide ears. These flanges are ,pierced by bolts 10, which also pass through the catch-basin top, as clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings.
The trash-box is provided at its front with an inlet-opening 11, extending the entire length of the trash-box and from the surface of the gutter or street to the catch-basin top, as clearly illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings, to afford a free passage for leaves and other trash to permit the same to enter the trash-box, whereby such trash is prevented from accumulating in the gutter. The trashbox is provided with an apertured back 12, consisting, preferably, of a grating and provided with rectangular openings 13 to perunit water, mud, and the like to pass freely through the trash-box and at the same time to form a straining device for retaining the trash within the traslrbox. The aperturcd back 12 of the trash-box extends. upward from the bottom thereof and terminates short of the top to provide an opening 14:. The upper edge of the apertured back 12 is preferably arranged in the same horizontal plane as the upper edge of the front wall 15, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings. The trash is prcvel'ited from liowingover the rear wallof the trash-boic by a straining device, consistii'ig of aserios ofinclinod pins or rods 1.6, mounted on and extending downwardly and rearwardly from the front portion of the removable lid 5. The lower ends of the rods project beyond and rest upon the upper edge of the rear wall. The lid is provided near its front edge with a depending enlargement 17, and the upper ends of the rods, which are arranged vertically when the lid is in a horizontal position, are suitably secured in sockets of the enlargement; but the rods may be applied to the lid in any other desired manner. The rods are adapted to partially close the opening at the back of the trash-box; but at the same time they form enlarged outlets to prevent the entrance to the catch basin from becoming clogged, so that there will be no liability of the water backing up into the street by reason of any accumulation of trash in the trash-box. The trash-box may be of any desired depth, and when the lid is removed the trash-box and the catch-basin may be readily cleaned.
It will be seen that the catch-basin top is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it provides an inlet, and that it will permit water, mud, and the like to flow freely into the catch-basin. Furthermore, it will be apparent that the device is adapted to catch and collect leaves and other trash to prevent the same from either accumulating in the gutteror in the catch-basin and that the trashbox is so arranged that its contents may be more conveniently removed than they could were they permitted to collect in the catchbasin. Also it will be clear that the catchbasin by collecting the trash is adapted to prevent the same from clogging the seweroutlet of the catch-basin and causing the water to back up in the gutter or street.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device of the class described, comprising a top designed to cover a catch-basin and provided with an opening, a trash-box depending from the top and having an entranceopening to permit water and trash to flow freelyinto it, the said trash-box being also provided with an outlet into the catch-basin for the water, and a lid covering the opening of the catch-basintop and adapted when removed to afford access to both the trash-box and the catch-basin.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a top adapted to cover a catch-basin, and a trash-box depending from and carried by the top, said trash-box being provided at its front with an inlet-opening to permit Water and trash to pass freely into it and having a water-outlet to permit the water to flow through it into the catch-basin.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a top adapted to cover a catch-basin, and a trash-box depending from and extending across the front of the top, and provided at the front with an inlet-opening to permit water and trash to pass freely into it, said trash-box being also provided with an apertured back forming a straining device.
4. A device of the class described, comprising a top adapted to cover a catch-basin, a trash-box provided at the front with an inletopening to permit water and trash to pass into it, said trash-box being also provided with an apertured back terminating short of the said top, and a removable straining device extending from the apertured back to the catch-basin top.
5. A device of the class described, comprising a top adapted to cover a catch-basin and having an opening, a trash-box depending from the top and provided at the front With an inletopening, and having an apertured back terminating short of the said top, and a lid covering the opening of the said top and provided with a depending straining device extending to the apertured back and fitting the space left vacant by the apertured back.
6. A device of the class described, comprising a top adapted to cover a catch-basin and having an opening, a trash-box depending from the top and provided at the front with an inletopening and having an apertured back termi nating short of the said top, and a lid covering the opening of the said top and provided with a depending straining device consisting of a series of rods extending to the apertured back and occupying the space left vacant by the apertured back.
7 A device of the class described, comprising a top adapted to cover a catch-basin and having an opening,a trash-box depending from the top and provided at the front with an inletopening, and having an apertured back terminating short of the said top, and a lid covering the opening of the said top and provided with a depending straining device consisting of a series of inclined rods arranged at intervals and extending downwardly and rearwardly to the apertured back.
8. A device of the class described, comprising a top adapted to cover a catch-basin and having an opening, a trash-box depending from and carried by the said top and provided at the front with an inlet-opening for water and trash, said trash-box being also provided with an outlet for water, and the back of the trashbox being terminated short of the top, and a removable lid covering the opening of the said top and provided with a straining device extending to the back of the trash-box.
9. In a device of the class described, a trashbox arranged at the upper front portion of a catch-basin and constituting an inlet for the same and provided at the front with an inletopening and having a grated back terminating short of the top of the trash-box, and a straining device extending from the grated back to the top of the trash-box.
