SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,370, dated March 22, 1904.

Application filed August 4, 1902.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES KnssLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, Miami county, Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Mouthpiece for Pipes or Cigar- Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof and in which like characters of reference designate the same parts.

My present invention relates to a new and useful mouthpiece for pipes and cigar-h olders; and its object is to prevent the moisture from the mouth getting into the pipe or holder. These objects are accomplished in the manner shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a pipe provided with myimproved mouthpiece. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a cigar-holderhavingmy improved mouthpiece. Figs. 8 and 4 are sectional elevation views of my improved mouthpiece, the sections being taken on the lines of their longitudinal axes. Fig. 5 is an enlarged elevation View of the valve, and Fig. 6 is asectional view on line X X of Fig. 5.

In said drawings, 10 represents my improved mouthpiece adapted to be attached to a pipe or cigar holder in the usual or any desirable manner and having an opening 11 and 12 eX- tending longitudinally therethrough. Opening 12 is of larger diameter and contains coiled spring 13, having its end 14 secured to one end of mouthpiece 10 and its opposite end 15 extending through opening 11 and loosely secured to valve 16, seated in recess 17 in the mouth end of the mouthpiece 10 and normally closing openings 11 and 12 at their mouth. When the smoker draws upon the mouthpiece, the valve 16 will be raised thereby to admit the smoke to the mouth of the smoker, and as saliva will not ordinarily flow against such a draft it will be excluded from the mouthpiece 10. In order to give the valve 16 a leverage over the spring 13 and at the same time to enable valve 16 to be raised at one side only from its seat, the spring end 15 is flexibly connected to said valve 16 at one side of its center, preferably by having its end hooked and. inserted Serial No. 118,326. into the eye 18, projecting from the inner side of valve 16 and to one side of the center thereof. When this connection between valve 16 and spring 13 is made nearer that edge of valve 16 toward the bottom of the mouthpiece 10, (see Fig. 3,) the valve will be opened only at its opposite or upper edge and will exclude moisture under all circumstances.

In Fig. 4 my improvement is bodily removable as a unit from the mouthpiece for cleaning or other purposes by having the enlarged opening 12 in the mouth end of mouthpiece 10 and occupied by tube 20, containing spring 13 pressing valve l6 against the mouth of tube 20, said tube being set within the outer edge of mouthpiece lO to form recess 17%, oocupied by valve 16 It will thus beseen that I have produced a mouthpiece of great simplicity and durability which will not only promote health and increase the comforts of smokers by preventing nicotin from getting into the mouth, but also increases the life of the pipe or cigarholder by preventing the access thereto of moisture from the smokers month which mingles with the tobacco and forms nicotin and makes the pipe or holder strong in a short time, and that when dirty, broken, or the spring becomes too weak the pipe or mouthpiece may be renewed by the most unskilled by simply removing said tubular member (thereby removing the spring and valve) and replacing a new tubular member with its contained spring and valve.

Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. In a mouthpiece, the combination with the mouthpiece having the draft opening therethrough, of a valve at the mouth-tip of said mouthpiece for closing said opening, and

3. In a mouthpiece, the combination of the mouthpiece having the draft-opening therethrough, said opening having an enlarged portion, a tubular member removably secured in said enlarged portion of said opening and extending to the mouth-tip end of said mouthpiece, a valve closing the mouth-tip end of said member, and means secured to said tubular member for yieldingly holding said valve closed, said tubular member being removable from the mouth-tip end of said mouthpiece, substantially as specified.

4. In a mouthpiece, the combination of the mouthpiece having the draft-opening there-' through, said opening having an enlarged portion, a tubular member removably mounted in said enlarged portion of said opening, a valve seated on one end of said member and closing said end, and a coil-spring in the bore of said tubular member and having one end connected to said'valve and the other end connegted to said member, substantially as specifie 5. In a mouthpiece, the combination of the mouthpiece having the draft-opening therethrough, said opening having an enlarged portion, a tubular member removably mounted in said enlarged portion of said opening, a valve seated on and closing one end of said member, a coil-spring in the bore of said member, and said spring being flexibly connected to said valve at a point to one side of its center and also connected to the opposite end of said member, substantially as specified.
