CLOSURE-FOR MILK-BOTTLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,195, dated November 24, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES C. KIMSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a Glosnre for Milk-Bottles, &c., of which the following is a specification.

, This invention relates to closures for milk bottles, &c., and is an improvementupon the closure shown and described in my prior application for patent, filed May 14, 1903, Serial No. 157,154.

The object of the present invention is to provide the ordinary disk-shaped closure employed as a top for milk-bottles with simple and effective means to facilitate the removal of the same and so arranged that the said means will normally lie against the disk and will be held in such position by engagement with the mouth of the bottle.

With this object in view the present invention consists in combination, with a diskshaped closure or top, of a superimposed layer terminating at one end within the periphery of the disk and attached at the other end to said disk to provide a flap or grasping portion, all as hereinafter particularly described in the following specification and specifically set forth in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail plan View of the closure. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the closure, the dotted lines showing the grasping portion or flap raised. Fig. t is a sectional view through the closure.

Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views of the drawings.

In carrying out my invention I employ in the first instance a plain top or closure A, which is preferablydisk-shaped and adapted to fit snugly in the mouth of a milk bottle, jar, or other receptacle, as is usual, and provide such a disk with a superimposed layer 0 of the same size as the disk A, with the exception that a small part of said layer is cut grasping portion terminating in the fingerengaging edge 0. Instead of connecting the disksA and 0 together by a staple any other suitable attaching means may be employed, it being essential merely that the two parts be securely connected together to leave the flap or grasping portion, the latter terminating withinthe periphery of the disk.

The closure constructed in accordance with my invention will have the appearance of an ordinary plain closure and will be practically of the same thickness throughout, with the exception of the cut-away portion to provide the finger-engaging edge 0, and in applying the closure to the mouth ofthe bottle in the usual manner the flap or grasping portion will be held flat against the disk A by its edge engaging with the mouth of the bottle. However, as the closure is not used many times the upper disk may be smaller than the main disk A; but it is preferable to make them of the same size, for the reason hereinbefore stated.

It will be readily seen that in removing the closure it is only necessary to lift the flap by engaging the edge 0 thereof, and said flap will then provide a grasping portion, by which the closure may be removed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 1. A closure for milk-bottles, &c., comprising a disk and a superimposed disk attached to the aforesaid disk and cut away to provide a finger-engaging edge.

2. A closure for milk-bottles, &c., comprising a disk and a superimposed disk attached to the aforesaid disk at one side of the center and cut away at the opposite side of the center to provide a finger-engaging edge.

3. A closure for milk-bottles, &c., comprising a disk and a superimposed disk attached to the aforesaid disk by a staple, said superimposed disk being cut away to provide a finger-engaging edge.

4. A closure for milk-bottles, 850., comprising a disk or top and a superimposed disk, said disks being attached together at one side of the center by a staple and the superimposed disk cut away at the opposite side of the center to provide a finger-engaging portion within the periphery of the lower disk.

5. A closure for milk-bottles, &c., comprising two disks of the same size with the exception only that one is cut away at its edge to provide a finger-engaging edge within the periphery of the other disk, and said disks connected together opposite said finger-engaging edge, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.

6. A closure for milk-bottles, (50., comprising two disks of the same size with the exception only that one is cut away at its edge to provide a finger-engaging edge within the periphery of the other disk, and said disks connected together by a staple near the edge opposite the finger-engaging edge, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.

7. A closure for milk-bottles, &c., comprising two disks of the same size with the exception only that one has a small segment cut therefrom to provide a chord, and said disks connected together opposite the chord, substantially as shown and for the purpose set'
