IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-WORKER.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, HENRY GARRETT, of Richmond, in'the county of Ray, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and improved Butter-Worker, and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention may bedistinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent. This invention relates to a new and improved machine for working butter, depriving it of buttermilk after taking it from the churn.

The object of the invention is to obtain a simple and eificient device for the purpose, and one which may be manipulated with the greatest facility. 'In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of my invention. Figure 2, a detached perspective view of a roller pertaining to the same. Figures 3 and 4, views of a scraper pertaining to the same. Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. The frame of the machine is constructed of two side pieces, each composed of two bars, A A, connected 'together at the top to form an inverted V. Between these side pieces the butter-pauB is secured, which may be constructed of tinned plate, with a curved or semicircular-bottom, a, and upright or flaring sides]; 1;. This pan rests upon transverse bars a secured-in curved bars c of theframe, and one end of the pan is formed with a cap of hood, G, having a piece of wire gauze, 61, inserted in it to serve as a strainer. D represents a rollerframecomposed of two angular bars connected by transverse pieces a. This roller-frame is fitted on an axis or shaft,-E, the ends of which pass through vertical slotsf in the upper parts of the side pieces of the frame, and the ends of this shaft E have spiral springs F attached, the lower ends of which are connected to the sides of the frame. These springs have a tendency to draw the roller-frame downward, and cause a roller, G or G, in the lower end of the same, to press or bear upon the butter. These rollers may be made of tinned plate, and one, 'G, has a longitudinal, fluted periphery, as shown in fig. 1, and the other, G, as shown in fig. 2, has a smooth periphery. These rollers may be fitted in the lower end of the frame D, and removed therefrom with the greatest facility, so that either roller may be used as required. a p

r The operation is as follows: If the butter be soft, the pan is filled about two-thirdsfnll of cold, clear water, warm water being used if the butter be hard. The fluted roller G is first used, and passed back and forth over the butter by operating the frame D. The water is changed repeatedly until it-ceases to be milky','and the smooth roller G is used at the latter part .of the operation. The water is poured off through the strainer d by tilting the device.
