HENRY A.' ESTES, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW J ERSEY,` ASSlGblOE TO HMSEL Y AND GEORGEVSMITH, OF SAME PLACE.

IMPROVEMENT In Borst HAY-roars.
'ro-ALLV wHoM'I'r MAY c'oNonnN; y l
Be it known that I, HENRY A. ESTES, of Jersey City', in the county'of Hudson, ,and State of New' Jersey;`
, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin HayElevntors; Aand I do'herehy declarel that` the followm v ing is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a portion of this specification, in whichv Figure 1 is a. side view of a haylelevator, constructed according to my invoption, showing the same 'in a.'A
4 closed position.
-Figure`2 is-an edge View of the same in alike position.'A l i Y Figure 31's aeeutral vertical section of the sa'me in the open position in which the same is used in raising the hay. 1 Y i Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in'all the figures. This invention relates to that class of horse hayzelevators commonly knownlas .harpoon-forks, and it consisteI in a toggle-joint and central operating-rod, in combination with a. tubular shaft and laterally-moving liftingspurs, whereby thesaid spurs 'may be readily brought to and retained in a`position at right angles to' the afore-' said shaft, in order to lift the hay, or be conveniently trippedr or operated to release and drop 'the saine therefrom when `raised to the height desired.
The invention furtherconsistsin a gum-[Leo arrangedat the upper end of the` shaft mentioned und in relation with a. lever, which operates the central rod and the lifting-spurs, thatthe saiddlejvenis e'ieetually prevented from striking against and being injured by beams, or similar obstructions, when the apparatus il employed iu barns or buildings.
; The invention further consists in a novel arrangement of parts, whereby theuapparatuans awhole, is made of very compact and convenient form, and capable of being very conveniently manipulated when in use.
To enable others to understand the construction and operation of myinvention, Iwill proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents th e` stock or main portion, of thefork, which may be of cast iron or `other suitable material, and which is made hollow or of 'tubular form, asA shown in g. 1, and preferably with ilattenedsides, as indi- .catedfby the gs.1 and 2. In the upper -end of this stock isl formed an eye,'a, to which is attached the draughtrope employed in raising the eievator when in use. A Formed in one side of the.upper end of the stock A-is a longitudinal slot, b, which communicates with the eye a, and consequently with the` interior or central slot, c, of the stock, and which has pivoted in it a lever, B, to, the upper orzout/er end of which is secured a suitable tripping-cord, d, andthe lower extremity of which `isconnected `by atransversev piu, a', with -vthe upper end ofA a central rod, C, which extends downward through thefixrternal slot c of the stock, with its lower end pivoted, `as shown at b', to the inner ends ot'i't'wo toggle-bars D-,theouter ends" of which are pivot'ed to the recessed inner or under sides of two tapering spurs, E, the' upper'rendsof which-arepivoted atthe`two opposite sides, as shown in figs. 1 and 3 of the lower'end of the s'toelcilfthe` said parte being so arranged, V'thdt by pushing the rod downward, the'toggle-bars, will be forced'outward to bring the spurs E into the horizontal position shown in fig. 2, as 'requiredin elevating the hay, while, by moving upward the aforesaid rod, the toggle-bars will be brought parallel and into the vertical position indicated in dotted outlinejin ig.-1, to bring the 'spurs close together, so that their adjacent pointed ends iay pdss freclyfinto the.,lnass ofhay to be elevated, all as hereinafter further explained. Formed at the upper end of the stock Afone upon Yeach side of the slot b, are two laterally projecting`plates', e, which constitute guards, designed to protect the lever Bj'when inthe position represented in iig. 3, from accidental contact with the beams or` timbers of'the barn or `building-iu which the elevator` is Aemployed. Y l l y In using the elevator, the several parts lthereofarefiret brought int'o Y the'position represented ing. -1, and theloweend of thesame is 'then forced downward iirto the-mass ofhayjo be elevated, which beingrdlone, the on'terV arm of the lever B is forced upward in to the space between'the guards' c, whichdepressing the inner arm i l'ot' the aforesaid lever, forces downward theoentrs-l rod C, undr operates the toggle-*barsD te force outward-the A, substantially ns sind for the purpose herein Vsei; forth. v y v i v A 43. Thelatemliy-m-oving spurs E, toggle-.bars D, and central .r'od c, arranged in rolati'on wi'ththe tubular'. vstock A, lever B; and guoi'il e substantially as und for the purpose herein set foith.:
apuro E, the said toggle-bags being b-roug-htnearly or quite in line with each other, iusuoh mnnue auto brucev orlsustain the aforesaid s'p11rs-intlieirA extended position. -The simi-@being thus extendednt rightrin'gles to the stock A, and embedded in'the hay, the elevator is raised in the usual or any Suitable monner, by the draughtrope attached to tho eye thereof, and the spurs E, matchingy of holding unfier thohay surrounding the stock A,
sustoinsx thesame until it is rnised to the required'lheight, whreupon the trip'pingmqfrdd isp'pulled, and; by
, ,depressing the cuter arm of thoJ levez-Bi.raises, the inner arm thereof to draw upwards the' viii-noi` ends of the toggle-bars n'such manner that then/eight of'`v the liny -upon the Ksp'u'g's E is allowed toforce the saine'doivnivard and'innard to their'origimil` closed position, the hay beingthus allowed to fall from; the elevator/tothe desired plu'ceof'l'deposit. Any injuryto the leyr B, during' the `elevuting-oper'ation just mentioned, from ucienthl contact'witli the booms-Voi' timbers of the building in which the apparatus is used, i eectually provided gz'iist Y by tlleqgguax'clel e, 'situnt'ednt theside's of the said lever, when thennme'is in position fogsucli elevating-ope'rntioii,
es hereinbet'ore explained.;l l I v I What; I claim smy invention, ,and desire to'securo byLtters Pntenisf'- 1 ,Q 1.- Thetoghle-'bars andfcentral operutingdfodlincombination with tile tubulo'r stock andthe 'two lnterallyl moving -lifting-spuis, substantinliyne end Afor the purpose herein set forth; i I
