Description

@uiten jtetes gstnt @ffice JOHN FRY, or BROOKFIELD, iLLiNois. i Letters .Patent No. 73,520, dated January 21, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT 1N smilie-MACHINES.
ALL WHOM Il MAY CONCERIT:`
y Be it knownthat I, JOHN FRY, of Broolriield, in the county of La Salle, and AState of Illinois, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Sawing-Macbincs; and I do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exactl description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the lettersV and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
I am aware that machines of a similar character for sawing {ire-wood have been used heretofore, but my invention consists in prolonging'the frame of the machine, orprovidin'g said frame with an arm, to which the snw-horse is attached, and in attaching said saw-horse to'the said arm, in such a manner as to he readily removed when desired; the object of the said arm and removable saw-'horse being to enable the machine to Ybe-usodvfor the purpose of sawing logs up into butts or cutslof nnydesirod length, as for mill-logs or cord-wood, ne by removing the saw-horse, the arm or prolongation-of the frame may be secured upon the log to sten-dy the machine, which can then be operated as hereinafter described. l
To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the construction andoperation of the same with particular-ity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which-- i i i I Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of my invention, and Figure 2 is u. side elevation of the same. l Similarletters of reference in the different figures denote the same parts of my invention. i represents a horizontal vframe or platform, supporting the operating parts of the machine, one end being secured to a saw-horse, B, upon which the wood to he sawe'd is placed, by means of a screw or bolt, b, which is removable, and the other end being supported h y the standards C, which are secured upon the axle D of the trucks-E. so that the machine may be moved from place to place by simply raising the other end of the machine, or it may be made so light and portable as tohc carried from plac to place by the operator, holdingjt under one arm. Y F represents a Hy or halancewheel,"supported upon suitable bearings in the standards G, and being provided at its centre with-a pinion, c, into which the geur-wheel H engages, so that by turning the crank I, the
said wheel F is revolved with the-desired rapidity. I l u v J represents an arm connecting the oscillating lever K, pivoted Vatfto the wheel F, at one of the points c1, which are eccentrically arranged, so that the revolution of saidjwheel F, as aforesaid,`will cause the desired reciprocating'movement to the saw-holder L and saw M. l The saw-horse B consists of. three ets ot crossed bars of wood, upon which the stick of wood marked N is arranged as shown, being clamped rmly thereto by means of a lever, P, one end of -which is-inserted in one of a series of holes in a. plate, h, attached to one side of the saw-horse, while the other, having-been forced down iirmly upon the stick of wood, is slipped undery one of a series of ratchet-teeth upon a plate, l, upon the oppositeidefof the saw-horse, as shown in the drawings.
The stick of wood having been properly arranged and fastened to the saw-horse, the operator turns the crank I, and the saw soon cuts the stick in tivo, when it is rcadjusted, 'and secured in position, and the operation is repeated.
VWhile the stick is being placed'or adjusted upon the sani-horse, the saw is placed upon a rest orl support, n, as it is also when the machine is being moved from place to place, as desired.
This machine may also be used to saw oii or saw up logs into any desired lengths, foi-'preparing cord-wood, stovcwood, or timber for the sawmill. When used for this purpose, the saw-horse is dispensed with, the same being readily detached from the machine by removing the bolt 6, which secures the two parts together. The end .of the platform is then placed upon the log, at the place where the-same is to be cut, and a. removable spike, marked a, is then driven into the log, thusfat once securing the machine in place, and attaching the log to the Ina-chine ready for the operation, which is effected as before described. y
The trucks and truck-axles may be omitted if desired, the standardsC, iii such oase, supporting the machine directly upon theground.
Instead of thegenriughereiu described for imparting motion to the wheel F, any* other suitable gearing or halting may be employed.. v
Having described the4 construction 'und operation of my invention, will nonv specify what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
I claim providing theframe of a portable sawng-mchine wth' au arm or prolongation, so constructed and arranged, thata. saw-horse can readily bel nttaced to or detached from the same, as and for the purposes'c specified. l h
lf, JOHN X FRY` mark.
