UNITED STATES PATENT ZAIDA B. WEBB, OF FLORHAM PARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO VYEBB FOLDING BOX COMPANY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
FOLDING BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,723, dated May 12, 1903 Application filed May 10, 1902. Serial No. 106,674. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ZAIDA B. WEBB, of Florham Park, Morris county, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present construction is of a box that is of a symmetrical and convenient shape and one that is adapted to be assembled and knocked down with ease and despatch. It is designed particularly as a fancy box, more especially fitted for the packing of candies and the like, at the same time being applicable to plain boxes, the. novelty lying principally in the closing and opening of the box and the means on the cover for insuring stability.
With these ends in view myinvention consists of certain features of construction and 2 5 in which similar figures of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2
is a top View, of the box in its open and closed condition, respectively. Figs. 3 and t are modified forms of securing mediums for the sides of the box.
In the drawings, 10 is the bottom portion,
which, assuming the blank to be flattened, is
provided with a series of peripheral radially- 5 arranged flaps 11, each of which in turn has a tongue 12 on one edge and a wing 13, which may be of any suitable contour, but preferably approximately. circular, of a diameter larger than the width of the flap. This will 0 allow an overhanging car 13 at each j uncture of flap and wing, the office of these being described hereinafter. The flaps 11 are bent perpendicularly to the bottom and form the sides of the box, and the tongues 12 are turned to the inside and lie as shown in Fig.
1, being gummed and sealed, if desirable, but not necessarily, as a tape or ribbon can be tied around the outside to prevent spreading. The wings to form the top are so arranged that the sides of these wings are covered and is used.
In Fig. 3 a portion of a box is shown with a self-locking means on the flaps that form the sides of the package. In this case the flaps 11 are provided with a slot 14 in each,
these slots receiving a lip 15, formed on the tongue 12 by a cut 16, the juncture of these being evident from the drawings.
In the constructionv shown in Fig. 4 the same blank as in Fig. 1 is used, except that the tongues 12 have a slot 17, and the tongues on the assemblage of the box being placed outside instead of inside the box can be penetrated through these slots 17 by a tape or ribbon 18, which can be drawn to the required tautness and tied or otherwise fastened.
From these constructions it will be evident that a box has been devised that is stable and compact, at the same time being particularly adapted to fancy boxes, such as candy-boxes or boxes to be used as favors. In the cases of the hexagonal or octagonal forms-in fact,
any having a multiplicity of sides beyond fourthey can be used in childrens parties tially as shown, any well-knownform can be used; but the principle of the folding and opening of the top in itself and in conjunction with the methods of securing, the sides shown herein are the features that stamp'this device with novelty. Y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A box comprising a bottom portion, peripheral flaps adapted to be folded to form the sides of the box, each flap being furnished with a tongue on one edge and a wing on the end, the wings being so arranged as to partially cover one another when the box is open and lie, when folded, between the next adjacent wings, and means of securing the sides in their perpendicular position.
2. A box comprising a bottom portion, radially-arranged peripheral flaps adapted to be folded to form the sides of the box, means of securing the sides in their perpendicular position, and each flap being furnished with a wing on its end, the wings being so arranged as to partially cover one another and lie, when folded, between the next adjacent wings, and cars at the juncture of the flaps and their wings, one to be inside and one outside the box.
3. A box comprising a bottom portion, radially-arranged peripheral flaps adapted to be folded to form the sides of the box, means for securing the sides in their perpendicular position, and each flap being furnished with a wing on its end, the wings being so arranged as to partially cover one another when the box is opened and lie, when folded, between the next adjacent wings.
4. A box comprising a bottom portion, radially-arranged peripheral flaps adapted to be folded to form the sides of the box, each flap being furnished with a tongue on one edge and a wing on the end, a slot in the flap, the tongues being cut to form a lip which is adapted to enter the slot and secure the flaps in their perpendicular position, the wings aforesaid being so arranged as to partially cover one another when the box is opened and lie, when folded, between the next adjacent wings.
5. A box comprising a bottom portion, radially-arranged peripheral flaps adapted to be folded to form the sides of the box, each flap being furnished'with a tongue on one edge, a slot in each tongue through which a ribbon or tape may be drawn to secure the sides in their perpendicular position, a wing on the end of each flap, these wings being so arranged as to partially cover one another when the box is opened and lie, when folded, between the adjacent wings.
6. A box comprising a bottom portion, radially-arranged flaps adapted to be folded and form the sides of the box, and means for securing the sides in their perpendicular position, each flap being furnished with a wing on its outer end, said wings being arranged to partially cover and overlap one another when open, and when folded to abut at the center of the top and lie between the next adjacentgvings.
7. A box comprising a bottom portion, radially-arranged flaps adapted to be folded to form the sides of the box, and means for securing the sides in their perpendicular position, each flap being furnished with a wing on its outer end, said wings being of a length equal to the radius of the box and adapted to cover one another when the box is opened, and abut and lie between the next adjacent wings when the box is shut.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
