JOSEPH D. BROWN AND WALTER MODERMOTT, OF GREENVILLE, MISSOURI.
CHAIN WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters lat'ent N 0. (12,253, dated October 28, 1902,
Application filed August 6, 1902- ,Co all whom it may concern/.-
Be itknown that we, JOSEPH D. BROWN and WALTER MCDERMOTT, citizens of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Wayne and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chain Wrenches; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to chain wrenches.
The object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of production, and eflicient in action.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly defined in the appended claims. 7
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation ofour improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a top plan View.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the handle, and 2 denotes a pivoted jaw, having a curved outer serrated face 3, claws 5 at one end and an aperture 6 at the other end.
7 denotes a chain, one end of which is pivoted between the ears 8, formed on the handle, and the other end of which is adapted after being passed around a pipe or other object to be held or turned to engage with the claws, and thus permit of the operation of the wrench. It will be noticed that several of the links a, b, and 0 have smooth outer sides, while the remaining links, or particularly those at or near the free end of the chain, are provided with shoulders 9. The links are 'of sufficient size to fit in the-space between the claws, so that the shoulders will engage the claws and-prevent the withdrawal of the links from between the claws. When a pipe or other object is confined between the chain and serrated face of the pivoted jaw, the greater Serial in. 118,670 (No model.)
sorted to without departing from the princi-. ple or sacrificing any of the advantages of our 1 invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. The combination of ahandle, a jaw pivoted at one end thereof and provided at one end with an aperture and at the other end with claws, a chain connected to the wrench at a point between its ends and extending through the aperture and constructed to engage and be held by the...claws, substantially as set forth.
2. A wrench eornprisinga handle, ajaw pivoted at one end thereof and provided with a curved serrated face, one end of said jaw be ing provided with claws and the other end with an aperture, a chain connected to the wrench and passed through said aperture and adapted to engage the claws, a series of the links of the chain being provided with shoulders which are adapted to engage said claws and thereby prevent the withdrawal of the chain from between said claws, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
