SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 694,353, dated March 4, 1902.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EMORY B. CLIFTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vithee, in the county of Clark and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Cots and Stretcher-s; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to a bed adapted to be quickly converted into either a cot or stretcher, as desired, and to be capable of being rolled up when not in use, so as to occupy very small space in either storage or transportation and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, partlyin vertical longitudinal section, of my said device arranged for use as a cot. Fig. 2 is a View of the same in end elevation. Fig. 3 is an under side plan view of my device arranged as a stretcher. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, taken on the line A A in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of my device with the parts arranged for storage or transportation and shown partially rolled up.

Referring tothe drawings, cob represent the side bars of my device, the side bar Ct being ofincreased thickness at one end on its under side, forming the downward extension c,with a transverse groove (Z therein, and a pivoted button 6, adapted to be swung across said groove when desired, and the side bar I) having a similar increased thickness or downward depression f at the opposite end, with a like transverse groove 9 therein and a similar pivoted button it. The leg 6 is pivotally secured to one end of the side bar a by the pivot-boltl just inside of the line of the frame-brace 1), the said leg i having a transverse groove 2 across it at a point near its free end and carrying a pivoted button 3 adjacent thereto. The log a is pivotally secured to the side bar I) at the opposite end of the device by the pivot-bolt 4 just inside the line of the frame-brace m, the said leg to also having a transverse groove (marked 5) and a pivoted button (marked 6) adjacent to its free end. The leg-brace 00 is secured by pivot-bolt 9 to the free end of leg 1), and the free end of said brace 00 has a recess 10 therein, said recessed end engaging with the groove 2 in leg 2, while the leg-brace y is secured by pivot-bolt 11 to the free end of leg to, and the free end of this brace 3 has a recess12 therein, this recessed end engaging with the groove 5 in leg to.

The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description of its. construction, taken in connection with same with the greatest economy of space, the device is inverted, as shown in Fig. 3, the buttons e and h are swung back, the recessed ends of the frame-braces 'm p lifted out of the grooves 01 g in the side bars, and said braces swung around on their pivots 7c 0, so as to rest on the side bars a b. The buttons 3 6 on the legs 25 u are swung back and the recessed ends of the leg-braces my lifted out of the leggrooves 2 5 and said leg-braces swung around on their pivot-bolts 9 11 parallel to and against the side-bars a b, the leg-brace 00 then overlapping the leg u and the leg-brace y similarly overlapping the leg t, and then the device rolled together, as indicated in Fig. 5, so that the described movable legs and braces are substantially Wrapped up by the covering 1', in which condition the device will occupy but little space and yet be ready for instantaneous adjustment either as a cot or stretcher, as desired, thus making a most convenient article for hospitals and camps as well as for hotel or other use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. Aconvertible cot and stretcher, com prising a pair of side bars, united by a flexible covering forming the bed proper, said side bars being transversely grooved, on their under surfaces, one at one end, and the other at its opposite end, in combination with pivoted frame-braces secured to the ungrooved ends of the opposed side bars and recessed at their free ends for engagement with the grooves in the side bars; pivoted buttons on the side bars for retaining the frame-braces in their engaged positions; folding legs pivotally secured to said side bars; and depending pivoted hooks for securing said legs in folded position.

2. Aconvertible cot and stretcher, comprising a pair of side bars, united by a flexible covering, forming the bed proper, said side bars being transversely grooved, on their under surfaces, one at one end, and the other at its opposite end, and provided with pivoted retaining-buttons adjacent to said grooves, in combination with pivoted frame-braces, secured to the opposite ends of the said side bars, and recessed at their free ends for engagement with said grooves in the side bars; two pairs of folding legs pivotally secured to said side bars, each pair being pivoted just inside the line of' the adjacent frame-brace, and one leg of each pair being transversely grooved across the under surface of its free end, and provided with a pivoted retainingbutton adjacent to said groove; a pair of pivoted leg-braces, each brace being secured to the free end of the non-grooved leg, and itself recessed at its free end for engagement with the grooved leg, in each pair of folding legs; and means for securing said legs in folded position, parallel to and against said side bars.
