Be it known that I, WILLIAM 'SNIFFIN, of Sing Sing, in the countyof Westchester, and State of New York, have invented a new andv improved Swivel Ship-Fender; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable those skilled in the nrt to mnke and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents my improved swivel ship-fender, suspended nt one end to hang vertically over the side ot a vessel to fend her oiftrom a wharf, or other vessel.

-Figure 2 represents the saine suspended nt both ends, to hang horizontally for the same purpose.

The object of this improvement is to provide n, fender for vessels which shall have a rotary motion by means of swivels or rollers at the end or ends to which the rope for suspending it is attached.

The sides of vessels are much defaced by having the paint chafed and worn 01T by the ordinay dat and rigid ship-fenders, which are rubbed against the vessel with every motion caused by the waves or the risc and fall of the tides as they lie beside each other, or alongside of awhurf. Hy improved swivel-fender rotates with the motion of a. vessel in such a. situation, und as it rolls over the surface does no injury whatever to the pai-int.

A represents a long, round wooden ship-fender to be suspended vertically over t-he side of a. vessel by a swivel, a, at one end, with the rope'b attgmched, as shown in fig. l, or horizontally by swivels alt both endswith the ropes b b attached, as shown in fig. 2. Instead of attaching the fender to the rope with a. swivel, a. thinible or roller, c, may be employed for the purpose when the fender is used horizontally, as shown in iig. 2, but I prefer the swivel joint in all cases.

It will be seen that when the fender is suspended between a. vessel and the wharf, or another vessel, it will turn on the swivel or swivel joints by which it is attached to the rope or ropes, and thus roll over the surface, without rubbing or chang the paint, with the motion of the vessel cai-used by the waves or the rise and fall of the tide. further protection for yachts and pleasureboats may be adopted by overlaying the fender Witha. coil of rope, as shown in tig. 2.

Having described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent#- The combination of the swivel a with the fender A, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described` WILLIAM sNIFFIN.
