To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUSTAVE BURKHARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain Oiling Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fountain oiling devices, and it has reference. particularly to a device for oiling bowling-alleys and other hard-wood floors but it-may be used for many other purposes.

One object of the invention is to provide a fountain oiling device ofsimple construction which can be manufactured inexpensively and used to apply and rub in oil or other liquid to a hard-wood floor.

A further object of the invention is to provide a soft and flexible surface for rubbing With these and other ends in view the in- I vention consists in the novel construction hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is an end view of my improved device. Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all of the figures, A designates the body, which is preferably tapered at its bottom to provide a narrow opening or throughout its length, in which two pieces of felt B are adjustably and securely fastened. The lower edge of each side 0 of the body is bent around a rod D, and these rods project beyond the ends of the body and receive the screw-bolts E. The ends of the body are provided with creases 15, so that the lower tapered end of the body will give sufficiently when the bolts E are tightened to secure the felt pieces in their adjusted position. These creases,which form ribs on the inner side of each end of the body, also serve to separate the upper portions of the felt pieces within the body, so that they will lie adjacent to the inclined sides and ends to form flanges h, which are.

The liquid-tank is provided with an inlet-opening I, having a removable cap J, and the liquid is permitted to'feed therefrom through the openings K in its bottom, any number of which may be employed and of any size. It will thus be observed that the liquid-tank constitutes also the top for the body, and the downturned flange H is arranged to fit closely and snugly on the body, so that it will not become accidentally displaced.

The liquid feeds .from the supply-tank directly upon the two pieces of felt at the point where they meet, and the felt in turn feeds the liquid to the floor. By separatingthe upper portions of the felt pieces in the manner shown in Fig. 2 I provide for feeding the liquid from the supply-tank directly to the lower working edges thereof, and the ribs formedwithin the body, on the ends thereof, always maintain the upper edges of the felt pieces separated for this purpose. When the working edges of the felt pieces become worn, thebolts E can be loosened and the felt pieces properly adjusted, after which the bolts are again tightened to hold the felt pieces securely in place. By providing these creases in the ends of the body I am enabled to tighten the bolts sufficiently to hold the felt pieces rigidly in place while the device is being used to rub the liquid in the wood, and they also enable the use of felt pieces of different thicknesses.

On one side of the body I provide a socket L to receive a handle M, and by means of this handle the device is rubbed over the floor until the felt has rubbed the oil into the floor in a thorough manner.

My improved device is primarily useful for oiling and polishing floors of any kind and for many other purposes.

The device has been made of tin, and it will beobserved that the side walls of the opening in the tapered edge of the body are rounded, so that they will not bind the felt pieces to such an extent as to prevent the proper feeding of the liquid, and they also prevent injury to the floor. 7

It is apparent that the devices by means of felt pieces will not be held so tightly; but if the liquid is thin or it is desired to provide only a limited flow the bolts may betightened to clamp the felt pieces securely together and in this way retard the flow of the liquid therethrough.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of a body having an opening at the bottom thereof, a feeding and rubbing device arranged in said opening and fastening means on the body adjacent to said opening for clamping the side and end walls of the opening in the body upon the feeding and rubbing device -to secure the same in place, substantially as described.

2. The combination of a tapered body having an opening at the bottom thereof, a'feeding and rubbing device arranged in said open ing and means for compressing the sides and ends of the body upon said device to secure the same in place, substantially as described.

3. The combination of a body having an opening at the bottom thereof, a feeding and rubbing device arranged in said opening, creases in the ends of the body, and means for fastening the body upon the feeding and 'the. sides of the body, substantially as described. I

5. The combination of a body having an opening at-the bottom thereof, two pieces of felt secured in said opening, and ribs on the inner sides of the ends of the body for separating the upper portions of the felt pieces, substantially as and for. the purpose described.

6. The combination of a body having an opening at the bottom thereof and closed sides and ends, a feeding and rubbing device arranged in said opening and comprising two pieces of felt, and a liquid-supply tank supported within the'body above the felt pieces and provided with openings through which the'liquid feeds tosaid felt pieces, substantially as described.

7. The combination of a body having an opening at the bottom thereof, a feeding and rubbing device arranged in' said opening, a liquid-supply tank in the upper portion of the body, and a top for said'tank having its edges extended beyond thetank to engage the upper edges of the sides and ends of the body to constitute a top also for the body, substantially as described. g 1
