HANDLE AND ADJUSTER FOR ELECTRBC LIGHTS.

Be it known that I, ELLIS EU GENE BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles and Adjusters for Electric Ligh ts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention consists of a combined handle and cord-adjuster for electric lights, the object being to produce a device which will afford a substantial support for the lamp and at the same time provide means whereby the height of the lamp may be conveniently adjusted at will and the slack of the cord disposed of in a neat manner and within small compass.

The invention consists of the construction hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims,

The invention will be better understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which-'- Figure l is an elevation illustrative of my invention,the lamp-cord being wrapped about the handle. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a top plan of the bandle with the cord removed, and Fig. 4. is a sectional view illustrating an alternative construction.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A represents a handle of suitable material, preferably wood, which consists of a body portion A and an elongated bifurcated portion A the former being provided with a screw threaded nipple 0t, adapted to receive the socket of an electric lamp, as indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2. The body A is also provided with a vertical bore 17, through which the cord 0 (inclosing the electric conductors) leads to the lamp, said bore 1) coinmunicating with the central bore a in the nipple a. Beginning a suitable distance above the bore 12 is a longitudinal groove E, which at the upper end of the handle extends entirely through the same, forming the bifurcations e and e, but which at the lower part thereof extends but a little more than halfway through. This specific construction, however, is not essential, as the groove for its entire length might extend entirely through the handle, as indicated in Fig. 4. When the lamp is at its lowest position, the cord will extend therefrom through bore 1) and groove E in a straight line and preferably through the center of the handle. It being desired to elevate the lamp, the cord will be carried out laterally through the groove to the outer surface of the handle and then wound or wrapped about said surface until the required elevation has been reached, whereupon it will be passed through and caught in the undercut notches g g in the bifurcations c and f, substantially in the mannershown in Fig. 1. These notches obviously are for the purpose of preventing the cord from unwinding or slipping. I do not, however, wish to confine myself to this specific means of securing the cord, since there are many other ways,all within the scope of my invention, in which the same might be done. Likewise changes in other features of construction might be made without departing from the spirit of the invention in the least.

Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A lamp-support and cord-adjuster, consisting of a handle provided at one end with means for attaching a lamp, and having a passage extending through it from end to end through which the lamp-cord is adapted to pass, and a lateral passage connecting the first passage with the ohtside of the handle, whereby the cord can be deflected from the longitudinal groove and wrapped around the external surface of the handle, substantially as described.

A lamp-support and cord-adjuster, consisting of a handle provided at one end with m cans for attaching a lamp, and having a passage extending through it from end to end through which the lamp-cord is adapted to pass, and a lateral passage connecting the first passage with the outside of the handle, whereby the cord can be deflected from the longitudinal groove and wrapped around the external surface of the handle, and means for securing the turns or windings of the cord in place.

3. In a device for the purpose described, a body portion and a bifurcated extension, the said body portion being provided with a suitable coupling for the attachment of a lamp and a bore therethrough for the passage of the lamp-cord, and the said bifurcated ex- IO tension having a surface adapted to receive one or more turns or windings of the said lamp-cord, and a device for securing said turns or windings in place.
