. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved draftrigging for cars, and more particularly to a metal draft-rigging for freight-cars, one object of the invention being to provide a draftrigging which will be constructed entirely of metal, the component parts of which can be easily and quickly assembled and any one of which canbe replaced with but comparatively slight expense in case of breakage.
A further object is to provide a draft-rigging with improved means for supporting the coupling.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating my improvements, the car-floor being removed. Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a view in section on the line as of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view in section on the line y y of Fig. 1; and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are detached views of details of construction.
A represents the body truss-bolster, mounted beneath the car and in which the contracted inner end 2 of my improved metal buffing-block or draft-block 1 is secured by bolts 3. The outer end of the buffing or draft block 1 is made on each side with outwardlyprojecting enlargements 4, having a central vertical tongue or tenon 5 to fit into grooves or mortises 6 in the inner ends of parallel metallic draft-irons 7 to prevent lateral dis placement of the latter. The draft-irons 7 are spaced a suitable distance apart to receive between them the coupling B and are made at their inner ends on their outer faces with bosses 8, having holes therein to aline with holes in bosses 9 on the draft-block 1 for the reception of bolts 10 to securely lock the draft-irons and block together. The draftirons 7 are also provided on their outside faces at their front end with perforated lugs 11 to receive the ends of truss-rods 12, which latter are passed over a truss-block 13 on the bolster A and through a transverse bar 14, held against brackets 15, secured to the timbers of the car, and nuts 16 are provided on the respective ends of the trussrods to rigidly support the draft-rigging.
Bolts 17 and 18 pass through the floor of the car and block 1 and draft-irons 7,1'espectively, and four of the latter also secure to the bottom face of the draft-irons a recessed tieplate 19.
The coupling B is mounted between the draft-irons 7 and has secured at its inner end by means of bolts 21 a vertically disposed yoke 22, in which are mounted transverse followers 23, provided in their opposite faces with large central seats 24 for a large coiled spring 26, surrounding a small coiled spring 26, and smaller seats are made at the four corners of the followers for smaller springs 27 to press one of said followers against the end of the coupling and the other against the vertical member of the yoke, and the ends of followers 23 are mounted to move in diametrically opposite pockets 28 in the draftirons, the ends of said pockets forming abutments to limit the movement of the followers and contract the springs, and hence give to the coupling an elastic connection with the draft-irons to relieve any shock thereto. The outer ends of the draft-irons are made in their inner side faces with diametrically opposite pockets 29 to seatsprings 30, adapted to bear against opposite sides of the coupling to permit the same yieldinglateral movement.
A transverse plate 3 is secured beneath the forward end ofcoupling B by four bolts 32, two of which pass through the main sill 32 and the other two pass through the buifer-bases 32 to support the coupling in proper position.
A transverse key 33 is passed through the coupling and alined slots 34 in the draft-irons, and, if desired, draft-rod 35 may be connected at one end to the key 33 and passed rearward and connected at its other end to a similar key in the coupling at the other end of the car to form a continuous draft-rigging. In
order to get the benefit of the draft-springs and passes through the draft-springs and follower-plates. When this continuous rod connection is used, the yoke is not used, and when the yoke is used the draft-rods are dispensed with.
It will be seen that the coupling B is supported between two parallel draft-irons removably secured to the draft or buffing block, and that in case of breakage ofeither of said draft-irons the damaged part can be readily removed and replaced by a new one without disconnecting the coupling or removing any other part of the draft-rigging.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts without departing from my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to be limited to the precise details shown, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention. Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

2. In a draft-rigging for cars, the combination of a metal draft or buffing block adapted to be secured to the bolster of a car and parallel draft-irons removably secured to the draft or buffingblock and having mortise-andtenon connection therewith.
3. 'In a draft-rigging, the combination of a draft or buffing block adapted to be secured to the bolster of a car, parallel draft-irons having mortise-and-tenon connection with said draft or buffing block, bosses on the adjacent ends of the block and irons, bolts passed through said bosses and securing said block and irons together and truss-rods connecting the free ends of the draft-irons with the car.
4. In a draft-rigging, the combination of a single metal draft or buffing block secured to the car, parallel draft-irons having pockets in their inner faces, springs in said pockets and means re movably securing the draft-irons to the end of the draft or buffing block at respective sides of the longitudinal axis thereof, of a coupling disposed between said draftirons and springs and a yielding connection between the coupling and said draft-irons.
