Description

him? ra/@Z I-Ilili Lul AM. PHOTO-LITH'U. C0. NN. (OSBURNES PROCESS) JOHN SCHLEY, OF SAVANNAH, VGEQldMGrlA. Leiters Patent No. 66,401, dated July 2,1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-POWERS.
@its Stimmt ttfen'et tu it tigre: ttttert eltnt mit mating part tf tte stmt TO `ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Beit known that I, JOHN SCHLEY, of Savannah, in thev county of Chatham, and State of Georgia, have invented a. new and improved Horse-PowerMuchine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-lV Figure 1A is'a verticall central section of my improved horse-power machine.
Figure 2 is a plan. i I
Similar' letters 'of reference indicate like parts. Y l
This invention relates to an improvement in the construction and arrangement of a machine to be used as a horse-power, and isl especially designed for plantation use,'to be applied to mills and'V all other purposes, the
and exaetdeseription thereof, which will enable others skilled inthe art to make and use the same, reference` nature of my invention consisting in an arrangement of machinery by which I am enabled to increase the speed of the machine conveniently and economically.
In constructing my horse-power machine I employ two cog-wheels, ofequal size and about six feet diameter, Y
one of them being double cogged, that is,4 Ahavinfar teeth both above and below, as shown at A, and the other being cogged on the under side, as shown at B, botlnwhcels being'horizontally mounted in a strong square frame, C, one atthe top and the otherat the bottom. The upper wheel B is stationary, and is rigidly secured to the framing of the machine, while the lower wllfeel A rotates loosely around and independent of a post orstud, D. Theseand all the wheels'in themachine are'bcvel-gears. The lower one, A, engages in a pinion, E, on its under sideto drive the pulley F, from which the power is taken. The shaft a, on which the pinion and. pulley are hung, is placed low down and covered for the horses to travel over in working 'the machine. Two vertical wheels G G, of the same size, are hung opposite each other upon axles b b, which are made fast to the under side of a.
horizontal wheel, H, which also revolves loosely around and independent of the post D. The wheel His cogged' on the upper side and gears into two vertical bevel-wheels K K, which are hung opposite cach other upon the ends of an axle, Ii,'that pivots on the upper end of the post D, and is made-fast to the lower end ofwa short vertical shaft, M, which passes up through 'theupper horizontal wheel B, and has the lever or sweep N connected'with its upper end. The wheels K K also gear into a concentric rim, P, placed on the under side of thewheel B.V 1 `The wheels are geared for speed as two 4to one, but any other suitable proportion may be applied inl the construction as desired. The sweep N is placed ata proper height to suit the line of draught of the horses.
It will he seen'fthatwhen the sweep N is moved around the shaft M will revolve the two Wheels K K on the axle L, and that they will give motion to the wheel H, which will carry around tlre vertical wheels G G on the axles b b, and that the' wheels G G will turn the lower wheel A to move the pinion E'below, and thus rotate the pulley F, from which the power is transmitted wherever it may be desired.
Having thus described the construction'and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y The arrangement of the vertical'gear-wh'eels 1S. upon the horizontal shaft L, secured to the vertical shaft M, and pivoted on the post D, meshing into the horizontal gear-wheel H, turning loosely upon the'post D, said wheel H provided upon its lunder side with horizontal shafts b, upon which the vertical gear-wheels G are supported, the latter meshing into the stationary wheel B and doublecogged revolving gear-wheel A, substantially as described for the purpose specified.
