No. 66,331. Patented July 2, 1867.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it krown that I, HAYWARD A; HARVEY, of Orange, in the county of Essex, and Stateof New Jersey,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nails: and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. t
The nature of my invention consists in making a nail either of square or round wire, with the head either finished or unfinished, having upon its shank compressions forming, cavities at intervals on .two sides and projections upon the edges, with the objectof presenting inequalities of surface 'mt'n'o' directions so as to meet the greatest elasticity oi" the wood into which the nail may be driven, whether it be driven parallel to or across the grain of the wood. The drawings which accompany and form a, part-of this specification comprise two views of the nail Figures 1 and 2 showing the compressions both on the face and upon the edge, together with another drawing.
Figure 3 showing a modifiedform of my invention which will be hereinafter described.
Similanletters of reference indicate the same-parts in all the figures.
a represents the head, Z) the shank, o e c the cavities, d the protuberanoes, and e the point of the nail.
I am aware various efforts have been made both with nails and staples to accomplish the purpose for which my invention is designed, out I have never seen or known of a nail having the peculiarity of cavities and .protubeia-tnccs in two directions, as herein described. A'patent was granted to me on the 2d of April, 1867, for a staple, the legs of which'hsd this peculiarity. I now propose to combine these inequalities of surface with a head, thus forming a nail which will have the increased holding qualities that I secure for my staple.
Fig. 3 represents around head nail, but having a portion of the metal forming thjeprotuberanees doldddd cut away so as to present a series of ratchets, and therefore still greater and" more 'ebrupt resistance to the withdrawal of the nail after the wood in o which it has been driven has by its natural elasticity conformed itself to the inequality of surface upon the edges. V
I do notconfine myself to any particular form or shape of head noroi point, nor to a finished or shaved head, althcugh'l think that by shaving the head the finished appearance of the nail will make it'especially desirable for use in those cases where screws are now used and are not intended to be withdrawn. I would also remark that for some purposes I conceive thata fiator chisel point will be preferable to the diamond point.
What I claim as nay-invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- The combination of the head of a nail with one or more cavities and protnberances or ratchet s upon the sides and edges of the shank thereof, substantially as described, whereby the lateral diameter 01' width of the shank increased, as shown.
H. ,A. HARVEY.
