Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. PAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tenallytown, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a simple and comparatively-inexpensive gutter for footways or walks along the borders of lawns and gardenbeds; and it has for its object to provide a gutter that can be easily kept in a cleanly condition and having` few or no joints through which grass would be likely to grow, as in` gutters constructed of brick or stone.

The invention consists of a gutter adapted especially to serve as a lawn edging or border and made from terra-cotta, burnt clay, or similar plastic material, with the peculiarities of construction hereinafter described and claimed.

In the annexed drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure l is a perspective view showing my improved gutter in position between the edge of a lawn and a path or footway. Fig. 2 is a perspective of one section of my improved gutter. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same. Fig.' 4 isa plan of a gutter-section having a curved form.

Referring to Fig. 1, the letter a designates a portion of a lawn, and b represents an adjacent path or road. The gutter between the lawn'and the path or road is composed of gutter-sections c, made from terra-cotta, burnt clay, or other suitable plastic material. Each gutter section may have any convenient length-say about four feet-and any width and depth desired. The main or body portion of each gutter-section is semicylindrical, or approximately so, in form and is open at the top, as shown. The terra-cotta gutter is to be laid in a trench of suitable depth, and for the purpose of preventing any lateral turning of a gutter-section the bottom portion of each gutter section or piece is constructed with a fiat base d, extended throughout the length of the gutter-section and of such width as to project laterally on each side beyond the curved gutter-wall. The lateral Iianges e, that are formed by the extended portions of the flat base, serve as a convenient and reliable means for securing each gutter-section in its required position without liability of turning or,tilting, for it will be readily understood that when this gutter is properly laid the earth on each side will become wedged and packed into the approXimately-triangular space between the curved walls of the gutter and the flanges e on each side.

One end of each gutter-section cis provided with curved coupling-flangesf, Figs. 2, 3, and 4, to receive the plain or unianged end of the adjoining gutter-section. By means of these coupling-flangesf the ends of the several guttersections are securely held together in proper alinement and in such manner as to form close joints. If desired, the joints between the several gutter -sections may be closed by any suitable cement.

The gutter-sections c may be made straight, as shown in Figs. l and 2, or curved, as shown in Fig. 4, or they may be made with any suitable bend in their length to suit the contour of the lawn or garden-bed along which they are to be placed.

Being made in lengths of about four or Iive feet with but few joints, and these easily closed with cement, and each gutter-section having a smooth and rounded drain-surface open at the top, the gutter can be easily kept clean with little labor and is not liable to become choked by grass growing in the joints. A gutter of this construction can be quickly and cheaply laid and is durable and thoroughly efficient as an edging for lawns, terraces, and ornamental parking.

What I claim as my invention is- 1. In an open-top gutter composed of terracotta or similar plastic material and adapted to form an edging for lawns, the herein-described gutter-section consisting of a semicylindrical body portion provided with a fiat base extended on both sides beyond said body portion of the gutter to form lateral base- Iianges, substantially as specified.
