HATCH-FASTENER FOR VESSELS.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 642,291, dated January 30, 1 900. Application filed May 9, 1899. Serial No. 716,110. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. BOWMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hatch-Fasteners for Vessels, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hatchways for ves sels and it consist-sin providingafastener for holding down the hatch-cover, having for its object to supply a simple, easy, and ready means of securing the cover and the canvas over the cover against leakage or storms.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a View of a part of the coamiug of a hatchway, the cover, and canvas covering, showing my new fastener attached, in perspective. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastener shown open.

A represents the coamin g of a vessels hatchway, B the hatclrcover, and O the canvas covering the same.

D is a bracket attached to the coaming about midway between the deck and the top of the coaming.

E is a hook hinged to the bracket by a peculiar slip-joint, whereby the hook maybe raised or lowered when adjusting it onto the cover.

F is a split or divided arm on the bracket, standing at an angle and leaning toward the coaming. The hook E is formed with an incline E, forming a dovetail joint when in place in the bracket, the purpose of which is that when the batten and wedge are inserted the hook will be firmly fastened in the bracket.

G is a projecting leaf on the hook, having a slot g parallel with the incline E, as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The leaf is inserted in the slot or space e in the arm F, and a pin f is put through the eyes in the upper end of the arm and through the slot 9 in the leaf, thus providing a pintle on which the hook may turn.

H is a batten put in between the coaming and the hook, designed for firmly dovetailing the hook in the bracket, also for holding the canvas.

J is a Wedge for binding the batten and hook in place.

K is a bar placed across the top of the canvas, having its ends inserted under the hooks at two opposite sides of the hatch-cover for the purpose of holding the canvas down and prevent wind getting under.

As many of these fasteners may be used on a hatchway as desired, and from their character it will be seen that they are a simple' and effectual means for the purpose intended.

Having described my invention, what I claimis 1. The combination with the coaming of a hatchway of brackets D having slotted arms F, hooks E having dovetails E and leaves G, having slots g, slidingly attached to the arms F, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination with the coaming of a hatchway and the cover and canvas therefor, of the brackets D, having slotted arms F, hooks E having dovetails E and leaves G having slots g, the battens H, and the wedges J, constructed and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
