THOMAS G. XVELCH AND SARAH WELOH, OF PENDLETON, INDIANA.
HEAD-REST FOR CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,534, dated December 5, 1899.
Application filed October 26, 1897. Serial No. 656,396. (No model.)
To MZZ whom, it 772mg concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS G. \VELOH and SARAH WELCH, citizens of the United States, residing at Pendleton, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, haveinvented a certain new and .useful Head-Rest for Barbers and Dental Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to a new and useful improvement i n adjustable head-rests for barber, dental, and other chairs, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective arrangement of this description which will provide for the various adjustments necessary in such a rest and which will give the operator complete control of the adjustment and also permit the ready removal of the device when occasion requires.
\Vith these endsin view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective of a portion of the back of achair, showing our improvement applied thereto; Fig. 2, a detail rear view of the adjustable block and head-rest, and Fig. 3 a section of a head-clamp for use for dental purposes.
In carrying out our invention as here embodied, A represents the back of a chair of any design having adjustably attached thereto the rack-bar B, with which engages the spring-actuated pawl C for regulating the height of this bar; but as this feature forms no special part of our invention its construction may be of any design. The block D is attached to the upper end of the rack-bar and moves therewith, while formed upon the upper portion of this block projects a cylindrical extension E. A socket F is provided for fitting over this extension and has formed around its lower edge a series of holes G, with which the nuts of the latch H are adapted to engage, and this latch is pivoted at I to the block and so arranged that it may be manipulated to hold the socket in any adjustment and also prevent its accidental removal from the extension. The upper end of the socket is slotted and has pivoted therein the bracket J, which latter has formed thereon a plate K for securement to the head-rest L, said rest being upholstered, as indicated at M, or in any other suitable manner. A set-screw N passes through the forked ends of the socket and the lower end of the bracket, as clearly shown, in order that the head-rest may be adjusted and held in any adjustment desired. From this description it will be seen that the head-rest may be raised and lowered by the proper adjustment of the rack-bar B, or it may be swung upon the set-screw N, so as to give any angle relative to the horizontal, or it may be swung upon the aXis of the extension by the proper manipulation of the latch H, thus affording a complete adjustment, so as to accommodate the position of the occupant of the chair, which is essential in dental and barber chairs. I
The block D, carrying the head-rest, may be removed from the chair at anytime by the withdrawal of the bar O and may likewise be replaced or another substituted therefor.
One of the principal advantages of ourimprovement is its exceeding simplicity and the fact that it may be adjusted by a person of little or no skill and when so adjusted will be as rigid as though the several parts were made permanently with the chair.
In Fig. 3 a head-clamp is shown which is especiallyadapted for use in dental work, and consists of the clamps a and b, which are mounted upon the bracket Jin the same manner as the head-rest M, and these clamps are drawn toward each other by the screw 0], passing through a portion of one and intoa threaded hole into the opposite clamp, said screw having an enlarged head ffor its manipulation. The inner walls of these clamps are upholstered, as indicated at g, so that by placing the patients head between the clamps and properly manipulating the screw this upholstered portion thereof will take a firm hold upon the head and prevent the patient from moving while being operated upon.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and useful is- 1. A head-rest for chairs, consisting of a vertically-adj ustable block, an extension projecting upward therefrom, a socket adapted to fit over said extension, a spring-actuated latch for holding said socket in any adjustment, and a bracket hinged to the socket and carrying the rest, as specified.
2. In combination, a rack-bar adjustably attached to the back of a chair, a block carried by said bar, an extension formed with the block, a socket adapted to fit over the extension, a spring-actuated latch for holding the socket in any adjustment, a bracket pivoted within the socket, a set-screw for holding the bracket in its adjustment, and a head-rest carried by the bracket, as shown and described.
3. In combination witha chair-back and a rack-bar adjustably attached thereto, of a block secured to said bar, an extension projecting upward from the block, a socket fitting over said extension and having a series of holes around its lower edge, a spring-actuated latch adapted to engage said holes for holding the socket in its adjustments, and a head-rest hinged to the socket by means of a clam p-screw, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we afifix our signatures in presence of tWo witnesses.
THOS. G. WELCI-I. SARAH WVELCH.
