'GEORGE GREGORY'AND F; B. MORSE, OF NEW HAVEN, GONNEO.TICUT ASSIGNORSTO THEMSELV'ES .AND W. H. COOPER, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 63,792, dated April' 16, 11867r To ALL wnoM 1T MAY ooNcERN:
Be it known that we, GEDRGE Gnneonr and F. B. Monsn, of New Haven, in the county ot'New Heren, and State of Con'neet'icut, have invented anew Improvement vin Stump Joint for Carringes; and we do hereby declare' the following, whentnken'inconnection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be u. full, clear, and exactdeseription of the same, and which said'drawings constitutepurt-of this I' specification, and represent, in-l Figure'l, a perspectiveview, thejoint in position :is when open. i Figure 2, o. perspective view when closed. Figure 3,' n sectional viewg und in Figures 4 and 5, the two parts detached'.`
This invention 4relates to' un improvement in what is termed a. stuup'joint for carriages, that is to any, th'e joint in the braces which supports the top in an upright position or permits it to drop when the joint is open,
- mdcpnsistsinihepeculiar formation of thejointwherebyit is much strengthened and its durability increased nt little or no additional expense.
f To enable others to construct and use our improvement, we will proceed to describe the same ns illustrated. in the accompanyingV drawings.
` A-and are the tivo parts of the joint; upon the one, B, is formed en ear, C, 1-nd upon the other an ear,
- D, inoutwnrd appearance corresponding to each other and to the common stump joint. Upon the one enr, C, is formed a. projecting stud, a, s seen in figs-3 and 4, in the other ear, Il), is formed recess, us seen in' iig. 5,
corresponding t the projection aupon the other enr, s o-that when the two parts are 4placed together, tho projection upon the one will tit into the recessof the other, and form a square shoulder bearing, us seen in iig. 3, so that the wholestrain of the joint cornes upon the metal of 'the joint'itself. A screw, passes through the `centre t'o secure the parts together, but by the construction of the joint as descrihedno strain or wear whatever comesupon the .rivet or screw (whichever it may he) which secures the two pnrtstogether. Heretofore the two ears have been formed so that the meeting surfaces lielat face to face, the whole'streinand weer coming upon the rivet or screw which securesthe two parts together, consequently" the joint is soonworn loose. Thus formed,
the joint is ready for mnrket. The braces are welded to each of the parts und formed sons to conform to .the
construction of the carrin'ge'top.'
We do not wis'h to be understood ns'broadly claiming n joint formed by they stud upon one part fitting into the corresponding recess inl the other, ns such is. common and well known. Our invention is simply for an improved article of manufacture.` Y
Having thus Fully described our invention, what we claim i new and useful, and desire ,to secure by Let'- ters Patent, is.
' The here'inhdescribed stump joint as an improved article of manufactureeonsisting of the two parts Aantrupon theearof one of which is formed. a stud, a, nndin the' other. a corresponding recess, so that the said* stud forms the bearing or pivot for the joint, substantially as herein set forth.
GEORGE GREGORY, FQB. MORSE.
