CATCH-BASIN.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 634,011, dated October 3, 1899.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES J. MAHoNY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron,-in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Catch-Basins, of which the following is a specification. My invention has relation to improvement in catch-basins for receiving surface water, particularly on streets from which it passes to a sewer; and the objects of my invention are to produce an improved basin that will take the surface water mingled with dirt and rubbish and from which it can entirelyescape through a screen that will retain all rubbish that might tend to clog the sewer to ally pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference-mun erals indicate like parts in the different views, Figure 1 is a portion of the interior of a catch-basin provided with my improvement, and'Fig. 2 a view-of the door to close the opening for adjusting the trap; r
Referring to the figures, l is the wall of the catch-basin, built into and forming a part of which is a hollow box or shaft 2. This shaft is preferably square, although experience may determine a different shape will be better for the purpose. On the outside of this shaft are fianges S to retain it in the wall. The lower part 4 of this shaft is bent outward and upward and terminates in a cylindrical end, by which it is united with the branch pipe 5, leading to the sewer.
Attached to the lower part of the back wall of the shaft is a plate 6, having in its upper end slots to receive binding-bolts 7, by

which'it is made vertically adjustable. The edges of this plate 6 fit the sides of the shaft, and'by this means the plate and curved part constitute a trap to prevent the entrance of gas from the sewer tothe catch-basin. The front wall of this shaft is perforated with a series of openings 8, narrower toward the interior of the basin, so that water passing through them from the basin will not become clogged with rubbish. In the lower end of the front wall is an opening 9, by which the bolts 7 and this opening is closed by a door 10, Fig. 2, perforated similarly to the front wall and having at its lower edge a hook 11 to catch inside the lower edge of the opening, its upper edge being held by buttons 12 on the shaft. On the inner back wall of the shaft at intervals are shelves 1?), one only of which is shown, that slope toward the front wall and for a purpose to be stated.
At the upper end of the front is an opening 14, guarded'by rods to form a screen to prevent large pieces of rubbish that might choke the sewer-from entering. The top of the shaft 2 is closed bya cover, in the center of which is'fastened a pipe 15, that extends upward to the sidewalk and is closed by a cover 16,
The operation of the basin is as follows: In

leaving all particles of rubbish in the basin that will not pass the openings 8. If the rainfall-is excessive, so that these openings will not take ito'ff at once, the surplus will pass through the openings 14, the larger particles of rubbish and ordinarily the lighter being caught by the "screen 14. As soon as the rainfall ceases or decreases sufficiently to permit the openings 8 to take the water it will fall, leaving only the sand and heavier particles at the bottom of the basin. As the water passes through the openings 14: it strikes,-in falling, the shelves 13 and is thus deflected against and washes the innerface of the perforated wall.

The shaft 2'is preferably made of iron, but may be of earthenware or other material, the desirable features being that it be non-absorbent and non-corrosive and of sufficient rigidity to subserve its purpose.
What I claim is- 1. The combination with a catch-basin of a shaft having a side consisting of a fiat plate of non-absorbent material adapted to form a part of the wall of the basin, the lower portion of said side being provided with fine openings narrowed toward the interior of said basin and the upper portion with a large opening guarded with bars, the lower end being curved to connectwith a sewer, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a catch-basin of a shaft having a perforated side adapted to form a part of the basin-wall, the lower end being curved outward and upward to form a connection with a sewer, and an adjustable plate in said curved portion to form a trap to prevent the escape of gas, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination with a catch-basinof a shaft having a perforated side adapted to form a part of the wall of the basin, and its lower end adapted to be connected with a sewer, of
shelves located in said shaft opposite and sloping toward the perforated side, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination with a catch-basin and a shaft having a perforated side adapted to open into the basin, and with its lower end adapted to be connected with a sewer, and sloping shelves located in said shaft opposite said perforated side, of a pipe in the top of said shaft for turning Water on said shelves, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination with a catch-basin of a shaft havinga perforated side adapted to form a part of the basin-wall, the lower end being curved outward and upward to form a connection with the sewer, and an adjustable plate in said curved portion to form a trap for sewer-gas, of an opening in said perforated wall adjacent to said plate, and a detachable door to'close said opening, substan tially as shown and for the purpose specified In testimony that I claim the above I hereunto set my hand.
