SPEUHW 'HON forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,367, dated. September 19, 1899.
Application le July 18, 1899-l Seriel No. 724,244. (No muriel-'1^ To @ZZ whom, it mpeg concern.-
Be it known theel, ADOLF RESOW, engi.- neer, residingpat Essen-on-tlJe-Ruhr, Germany, 'have' invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Carriages for High-Fire'ield- Guns, of which the following-is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in carriages for high-nre field-guns de scribed and claimed in United States Patent No. 620,802, granted to myself and 0. Lanber March 7, 1899, its object being to reduce tire vertical component of the for-oe due to the recoil in snob. a manner that bracing of the carriage against the ground may oe dispensed with or that comparatively Week extra support willi. be suticient. This is a'oo'ornplished by the use oi Huid-brakes interposed between the carriage-stock and the axis of the wheels, respectively the arms or cranks extending from the axles, so as to transmit thereto the relative motion or these parts. p
The nature of the invention Wiii- 'nest ne understood by reference to the anneflied drawings, in Which- Y Figure l represents a side elevation, partly in section, of a gnn-oarriage embodying the invention in the position of rest. Fig. 2 is a similar elevation snowing the carriage-stonk in its lowest position.
Similar letters of reference designate dorresponding partsin the two views.
As shown in the drawings, tile Wheel-axle is cranked and consists of a middle part m,
to which the cnrriage-stookl is pivotaliy corrneoted, and two cranks n, on which the wheels are mounted. Ext-cli crank n. is provided` with tare eyes o and 1.1.
D is e. spring-bolt guided wiLhin a block d, pivoted to the carriagastoci; and-within the siotted flange g of the carragestook, its upper end being pivotcd to tile eye ce of tno cre-nir n. Each spring-bolt L is provided .rtlr a dish-spring column inputting at one end against a nut e, screwed onto the bolt, and :it the other cud against a slotted carriage-stock.
' rection.
u and for tire 'purpose spccliied.
Flange gef the h designates rthe.pistou-rod of a hydraulic brake of the nsual consin'uction,` with contraoted passages for the liquid between the two sides of the piston during recoil, but substantially free communication in opposite di- 'ihe cylinder i of the liquid-brake is pivoted to the carriage-stock. The pistonrod k is pivoted to the eye c of the crank/n.
The action of the apparatus is as follows: In firing the relative motion of the carriagest'ook Z and of the crank-arms rn, not only compresses the springs f, as in Patent No. 620, 802,l
out in addition to this aotuates the piston of the liquid-brake. By these means part of the energy of the recoil is taken up in compressing the springs `and another part by the rcsistance of the liquid-brakes. In proportion to the magnitude of the latter part of the recoil the strain ou the support is reduced, so that the dimensions of the support may consequently be reduced or the extra support may eventually be omitted altogether.
In carriages for ieid-gnns, a carriagestook pivoted tothe wheelnxie eccentrieally to the axis of the wheels, 'so as to allow a limited oscillation ot' the carriage-stock around the axis of the wheels -under the action of the weight and recoil; springs between the axles of the wheels and the carriage-stock acting in opposition to the tendency of the weight and recoil to torn the carriage-stock around. the axis of the wheels, and liquid-brakes, like` wise interposed between the axles of the .Wheels and the carriage-stock, to take up part of the energy of the recoil, substanti( y as r. 'v
in testimony whereof i have hereunto sot my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
