IMFROVED WASHNG MAGHINE.
T0 WHOMIT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known 'that I, 0.1i. CARTER, of Union city, in the countyoi' Randolph, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and improvediWa'shing Machine; and I do herebyT declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilledin the -art to make and use theisame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 'forming part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a view of an ordinary tub and bench with my invention attached,'in full Working order.

The object of this invention is to obtain a simple and eiective Washing machine, and it consists-in placing e perforated b'ox, Without bottom, in an ordinary tub or vessel, capable of holding Water, and by' means of a lever and compresser, operating the same in the manner substantially as hereinafter set forth, whereby washing is donein a very effective manner. l
A represents a Acommonbench, B an ordinary tub, the box into'which the clothes are put, D and K the compresser, E the post or fulcrum for the levei` H, F the strap, fastening the' lever to the compresser, G the strap,l passing lround the lever and down under the compressernnd under the clothes; l, a projection to fasten the box-'G to the tub, 0 the point-Where Athe bench A, the tub B, the box and the post E are all connected 'together by a screw or bolt.
.To enable others to use my invention, I will proceed to describe its operation: The strap Gbeing detached from the lever H, will allow it to be thrown back, carrying the compresser D K With it, thereby leaving the box C clear, and leaving the strapv G at the bottom of4 the box C. The clothes vto be washed ore laid in the box C and on the strap Cr, water being put in the tub or vessel forl holding water; the lever and compresser being brought boel; to the position as represented in iig. 1, the strap G is then fastened to.' the lever H, thereby oonnecting the clothes compresser and lever together when pressureiis applied to the lever, which acts on the oompresser, the-Water is pressed out ofthe clothes; then when the lever and compresser are lifted, the strap Giifts the clothes, thereby alloiving them to become again saturated;l pressure again being'applied, the Water is pressed out as before. The box C serving the. purpose of securing. the compresser K in its proper place and retaining the clothes under it, and being perforated, allows the 'Water to pass in and out freely. rlihus it Will'be seen that by this simple arrangement a cheap and effective washing machine is obtained.
Having thus described myninventiomll claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement ofy the perforated box C, the 'compresser D K, and the strap Gr, constructed and operating in thc'manneraud for the purpose herein specified.
