Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. LANG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oyens, in the county of Plymouth and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable \Vashstands; and I do hereby declare the following'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable washstands.
The object of the invention is to provide a washstand of the character mentioned which is designed to dispense with the use of stools, benches, and the like for supporting washbasins and to provide a washstand which may be so regulated that the height of the basin carried thereby shall be sufficient for diiferent-sized persons, and thereby providing a washstand which may be employed by small children as well as adults. 7
XVith this object in view the invention consists, substantially, in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully illustrated,described, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of an adjustable washstand constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is atop plan view. Fig. & is a rear elevation of the sliding block, upon which the basin-holder and soap-holder are mounted. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view illustrating different means for securing the basin-holder to the slide-block and soapholder. Fig. 6 is a perspective View showing another form of the invention. Fig. 7 is a similar View in detail of the securing-bracket carried by the slide-block illustrated in Fig. 6.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a supporting-standard, which may be of any desired material, and said standard is adapted to be applied to a wall or other suitable locality by means of screws or other equivalent means placed at the upper and lower ends of said standard. The standard 1 has at its facea longitudinal groove 2, and formed at each side of the standard 1 and extending outwardly therefrom is a guide-flange 3 for a purpose to be presently'stated.
Mounted upon the standard 1 is a slideblock 4, which slide-block may also be formed of any suitable material, and said slide-block 42 is provided at its rear face with a T-shaped groove 5, the groove 5 being adapted to receive the flanges 3 of the standardl, and thereby retain the block 4 upon the said standard, but permit said block moving vertically on said standard.
6 designates a basin-holder, which holder is preferably formed of a steel rod or any other suitable material, and said rod is bent to conform to the shape of an ordinary washbasin, so that the latter may be supported when placed upon the holder. The rod of which the holder 6 is formed is provided at its forward portion with a U-shaped offset 7, and said offset affords free access of a hand into and beneath the basin, so that the latter may be readily removed from the holder 6 when so desired. It will also be noted that the oifset 7 is bent downwardly and underneath the basin and the ends of the rod of which the holder 6 is formed after the circle is completed lie adjacent to each other, but the extremities thereof extend downwardly and diverge, so as to provide attaching-arms 8, the extreme portions of said arms being then bent into a substantially horizontal plane extending to and being wrapped around the lower portion of the offset '7. It will thus be seen that by reason of this construction the holder 6 embodies great strength, and is thus adapted to securely support the basin.
Mounted upon the upper end of the slideblock 5 is a soap-holder 9, and it will be noted that the holder 9 extends at both sides of the block at, the front edge of the holder 9 being cut away, so as to permit the basin fitting therein, and it will also be noted at this point that the basin-holder 6 is in substantially the same plane as the soap-holder, so that the holder 9 is a depression 10, the bottom of which is ridged, and these depressions are designed to receive the cakes of soap when the same are placed upon the holder 9. In order that the basin-holder 6 may be held upon the slide-block 4, and thus in its proper relation, a bolt 11 is seated in a socket 12, formed in the rear face of the block 4, and the threaded shank of the bolt 11 passes between the diverging arms 8. A yoke-clamp 13 is provided with an opening at its center, through which the threaded shank of the bolt 11 passes, and mounted on said threaded shank is a thumb-nut 14, by which the clamp 13 may be pressed tightly upon the arms 8, and by means of the yoke-clamp 13 and the thumb-nut 14 it is apparent that the arms 8 of the holder 6 will be retained firmly upon the slide-block 4, and thus the basin-holder 6 properly held.
A lifting-lever 15 is arranged at the upper end of the T-shaped slot 5 and projects above the soap-holder 9, and the lower end of said lever 15 extends downwardly to a sufficient extent as to lie opposite to the socket 12 formed in the slide-block 4. A coiled spring 16 is arranged within a socket 16 and has one of its ends bearing against the lower end of the lifting-lever 15, so that said end of the lever 15 is forced away from the socket 16. The upper end of the lever 15 is curved to provide a finger-catch 17, and said lever 15 is provided at its sides, intermediate its lower end and the finger-catch 17, with oppositelydisposed notches 18, in which are seated screws 19 or their equivalent, and by reason of the screws 19 being disposed in the notches 18 it is evident that said screws form the fulcrum upon which the lever 15 works.
Arranged throughout the length of the longitudinal groove 2 of the vertical standard 1 is a series of regularly-spaced heads or projections 20, and said projections are adapted to be engaged by the lower end of the liftinglever 15, so that the slide-block 4 may be held at difierent points throughout the length of the standard 1, and by reason of this it is evident that the basin carried by the holder 6 maybe positioned at ditferentheightsin order that the same may suit the requirements of different-sized persons.
The supporting-standard 1 is provided at its upper end with a head 21, the ends of which extend beyond the guide-flanges of said standard, and said head 21 is adapted for use as a name-plate, and also serves the purpose of a stop for limiting the upward movement of the slide-block 4.
'In Fig. 5 is illustrated a difiereut form of the means for securing the basin-holder 6 to the soap-holder 9 and slide-block 4. This consists in providing grooves 22 in the soapholder 9 and slide-block 4, which grooves conform to the shape of the basin-holder, so that the latter is adapted to fit within the grooves and be firmly seated therein, and in order that the basin-holder 6 may be retained in the grooves 22 a yoke 23 is employed, the latter being secured at its ends by screws 24 to the soap-holder.
Fig. 6 illustrates a diflerent form of the invention, and referring thereto it will be observed that the slide-block 4 is slightly different from that shown in Fig. 1, said slideblock being of the same width as the standard 1, and secured to the lower end ofthe slideblock 4 by means of rivets, screws, or other suitable devices is a securing-bracket 25. The bracket 25 is of substantially U shape, being formed of a single piece of any suitable material, and it will be noted that the body portion of the bracket lies at the front face of the block 4, the ends of the bracket being bent at right angles to said body portion and having their extremities bent so as to lie parallel to the body. By reason of this construction it will be seen that the securingbracket 25 is adapted to embrace the guideflanges 2 at the sides of the standard 1 and in this manner effectively hold the lower end of the block 4 upon said standard and onlypermit said end having a vertical movement, movement in any other direction being prevented. The soap-holder 9 is arranged at the upper end of the block 4 in a manner similar to the form shown in Fig. 1, and said soap-holder is provided at its rear edge with a T-shaped recess 26, which receives the standard 1 and the flanges 2 thereof, and thus the block 4 is held upon the standard 1 and adapted to move along the same. The remaining portions of the washstand shown in Fig. 6 are similar to those illustrated in the other figures.
The manner of using the herein-described washstand will be readily understood. If the basin-holder 6 is at a point upon the supporting-standard 1 which is too high for a child to employ the basin, it is simply necessary to grasp the finger-catch 17 and raise the same slightly. This movement of the finger-catch 17 moves the lifting-lever 15 upon its fulcrum, and thereby releases the lever 15 from engagement with the projection 20, which holds the same at its elevated position, and it will thus be seen that the slide-block 4 is free to move downwardly upon the standard 1. When the basin-holder 6 has been lowered to the required distance, the finger-catch 17 is released and immediately the coiled spring 16 forces the lower end of the lever 15 into engagement with one of the heads or projections 20, which engagement prevents further downward movement of the basin, and the latter is now in position for use. On the other hand, if it is desired to raise the basin so that an adult may use the same, and thus avoid the necessity of stoopin g, all that is required is to grasp the finger-catch 17 and exert a lifting force thereou,so that the slide-block 4 may be moved upwardly upon the supporting-standard 1,
and after the slide-block has been moved sufficiently to position the same at the required height pressure on the finger-catch 17 is released, when the coiled spring 16 forces the lower end of the lifting-lever 15 into engagement with one of the heads or projections 20 and thus looks the slide-block 4 against descent.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that the herein-described improvements provide a washstand which may be employed either by children or by adults and one which may be cheaply manufactured, so that the necessity of employing stools, benches, or the like for supporting a washbasin is entirely dispensed with, and in order to prevent corrosion all the metal parts will be preferably galvanized.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an adjustable \vashstand, the combination with a supportirig-standard, of a slideblock mounted upon said standard, a basinholder carried by said slide-block, and a lift ing-lever also carried by the slide-block and adapted to engage the supporting-standard to I lock the slide-block at different points throughout the length of the supporting-standard, substantially as described.
2. In an adjustable washstand, the combination with a supportin -standard, of a slideblock mounted upon said standard, a basinholder removably secured to and carried by said slide-block, a soap-holder also carried by the slide-block, and a liftingdever carried by the slid e-block and adapted to engage the supporting-standard to lock the slide-block at different points throughout the length of the standard, substantially as described.
In an adjustable washstand,'the combination with a supporting'standard provided with guide-fianges, of a slide-block mounted upon said standard and adapted to slide along said flanges, a basin-holder carried by the slide-block, a soap-holder also carried by the slide-block, and a lifting-lever fulcrumed upon the slide-block and adapted to normally engage the supporting-standard for retaining the slide-block at different points throughout the length of the standard, substantially as described.

In an adjustable washstand, the combination with a supporting-standard provided at its sides with guide-flanges and having a longitudinal groove extending throughout one of its faces, of a slide-block mounted upon the supporting-standard and adapted to travel along the guide-flanges thereof, a basin-holder carried by the slide-block, a soap holder also carried by the slide-block and provided with a depression having its bottom ridged for the reception of the soap, and a lifting-lever fulcrumed upon the slide-block and adapted to Work within the longitudinal groove of the supporting-standard, said lifting-lever being adapted to engage the supporting-standard to lock the slide-block at difierent points throughout the length of the supporting-standard, substantially as described.
6. In an adjustable Washstand, the combination with a supporting-standard, of a slideblock mounted thereon,abasin-holder carried by the slide-block and formed of asingle piece bent to conform to the shape of a basin, said holder being provided With diverging attaching-arms, a bolt passing through the slideblock, a yoke-clamp mounted upon said bolt, and a thumb-nut also mounted upon the bolt and adapted to press the yoke-clamp against the attaching-arms of the basin-holder to secure the latter upon the slide-block, substantially as described.
7. In an adjustable washstand, the combination with a supporting-standard, of a slideblock mounted thereon,a basin-holder carried by said slide-block, a lifting-lever also carried by said slide-block and provided at its sides with notches, screws or the like seated in said notches and adapted to fulcrum the lifting-lever upon the slide-block, and a spring for forein g the lifting-lever into engagement with the supporting-standard to lock the slide-block at different points throughout the length of the supporting-standard, substantially as described.
8. In an adjustable washstand, the combination with a supporting-standard, of a slideblock mounted thereon,a basin-holder carried by the slide-block, a soap-holder also carried by the slide-block, said basin-holder being in.
the same plane as the soap-holder, whereby the basin may rest upon the soap-holder, and means for locking the slide-block at different points throughout the length of the supporting-standard, substantially as described.
9. In an adjustable washstand, the combination with a supporting-standard, of a slide block mounted thereon,a basin-holder carried by the slide-block, a soap-holder also carried by the slide-block and having one of its edges cut away to permit a basin entering therein, and means for locking the slide-block at different points throughout the length of the supporting-standard, substantially as described.
10. In an adjustable washstand, the combination with a supporting-standard provided at its sides with guide-flanges, of a slideblock mounted upon said standard and provided with a T-shaped groove adapted to receive the standard so as to travel along the IIO IIS
guide-flanges thereof, a basin-holder carried by said slide-block and formed of a single piece bent to conform to the shape of a basin, said basin-holderbeing provided at one of its edges with an offset adapted to facilitate removal of the basin, the ends of the piece of which the basin-holder is formed diverging to form attaching-arms, a bolt passing through the slide-block, a yoke-clamp mounted upon the shank of the bolt andadapted to secure the attaching-arms to the slide-block,a thumbnut mounted upon said bolt for retaining the yoke-clamp thereon, a soap-holder also carried by the slide-block, and means for locking the slide-block at different points throughout the length of the supporting-standard, substantially as described.
11. In an adjustable washstand, thecombination with a supporting-standard provided at its sides with guide-flanges and having a longitudinal groove, of a slide-block mounted upon the supporting-standard and provided with a T-shaped groove adapted to receive the guide-flanges of the supporting-standard to permit the slide-block traveling thereon, a basin-holder carried by the slide-block and formed of a single piece bent to conform to the shape of a basin, said basin-holder being provided with an offset adapted to facilitate removal of the basin and having its ends diverging to-form attaching-arms, a bolt passing through the slide-block, a yoke-clamp mounted upon the shank of said bolt to se .cure the attaching-arms to the slide-block, a
thumb-nut also mounted upon the bolt and adapted to retain the yoke-clamp thereon, a
soap-holder carried by the slide-block and provided with a depression havingits bottom ridged and adapted to receive the soap, a 1ifting-lever arranged within theT-shaped groove of the slide-block and having its upper end bent to form a finger-catch, the sides of said lever being provided with notches, screws or the like seated in said notches and adapted to fulcrum the lifting-lever upon the slideblock, a series of spaced projections arranged within the longitudinal groove of the supporting-standard, and a spring for forcing the lifting-lever within said groove, whereby said lifting-lever is adapted to engage said proj ections for retaining the slide-block at-different points throughout the length of the supporting-standard, substantially as described.
12. In an adjustable washstand, the combination with a supporting-standard, of a slide block mounted thereon, a basin-holder carried by the slide-block and formed of a single piece bent to conform to the shape of a basin, said holder being provided with an offset and having diverging attaching-arms the extremities of which lie in a substantially horizontal plane and extending to the offset, said extremities being wrapped around said offset, and means for securing the basin-holder to the slide-block, substantially as described.
