LABEL-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 624,701, dated May 9, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LAWRENCE K. STEVEN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Unity, in the county of Williams and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improvement in label holders and is especially adapted for use by druggists. Its object is to provide a receptacle which can be readily opened and closed at the top while attached to bottles, especially those of a round, oval, or curved form in cross-section, or other receptacles for the storage of articles of commerce.

To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Wl1lGl1'- Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a bottle having the device applied thereto. Referring to said figures by letters of reference, A is the body of the label-holder, having one surface conforming to the contour of the receptacle to which it is to. be secured. Hinged to said body A by means of a hinge a is a cover B, the inner surface of which like Wise conforms for part of its length to the it, as shown at b, being cut off or reduced for' the purpose hereinafter described.

Secured to the inner surface of the hinged side of the body A is a spring plate or rod E, which normally rests against the corresponding inner side of the cover and tends to force the same backward as soon as released from its closed position. A catch F is also provided at the opposite side for retaining the cover in closed position. This is preferably formed, as shown in' the drawings, to permit the ready release of the cover by the pressure of the finger against the leverportion of said catch.

In use' the concave surface of the labelholder is placed against the side of the bottle or other desired receptacle and attached thereto by means of cement or in any other preferred manner. with labels having printed or otherwise expressed thereon the name or symbol of the material contained within the receptacle to which it is attached. If it is desired, a card-holder, as shown at Gin Fig. 1, may be formed on or secured to the outer face of the holder in any suitable manner. This may be used to receive a slip or card having the name or symbol of the contents of the receptacle to which the holder is attached denoted thereon. By this arrangement any bottle maybe used without the necessity of painting, burning, or pasting this information thereon, the set together making a neat and attractive appearance. This arrangement will be especially useful in connection with bottles which have not been previously prepared with a particular name or symbol and permits the use of the bottle at different times for different articles without necessitating the mutilation or covering of the original characters thereon, as is generally done with the bottles now in use.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is

1. A label-holder having one side adapted to conform to the surface of the receptacle to which it is attached,'and provided with an upwardly-movable cover hinged at one end and adapted to move in a vertical direction, and reduced on its inner side at its other end, to permit such movement, for the purpose and substantially as described.

2. A label-holder having a body portion the inner surface of which conforms to the surface of the receptacle to whichit is attached,

and an upwardly-extending portion of said body upon its inner surface and near one side, as shown, with an upwardly-movable cover pivoted to the opposite side of said body, having a reduced end adapted to be held snugly against and behind, said upwardly-extending portion, and a card-holder upon the outer face of the body portion, for the purpose and substantially as described.

3. In a label-holder, the combination of a body portion, having its inner surface conforming to the curvature of the receptacle to which it is attached, an upward extension at one side of said inner surface, a guide intermediate the sides, upon both the front and rear surfaces said guides forming a ledge for the purpose described, a cover hinged to the opposite side of the body, having its opposite end reduced to fit snugly behind and against said extension of the body portion when closed, and a spring and catch for forcing said cover open and retaining it in closed position, respectively, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
