Description

No. 624,324. Patented May 2, I899. I. M. GEORGE.
HAMMOCK SLING.
(Application filed Feb. 9, 1899.)
(No Model.)
M T N E V W W/ T/VE SSE 8 UNITED STATES AmE -T OFFICE.
IRA MELVILLE GEORGE, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
HAMMOCK-SLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,324, dated May 2, 1899.
. Application filed February 9, 1899. Serial No. 705,024. (No model.)
attached to a bedstead, window-casing, or
other support for suspending a hammock in which a child may sleep and which when in use 011 a bedstead may be swung over the bed, so that the child will be within easy reach of its nurse or parents in the bed and when not in use may be swung over the footboard, so as not to interfere with the making up or dressing of the bed.
I will describe a hammock-sling embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hamm ocksling embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 shows a modification. H
The hammock-sling comprises two davits 1 2, each mounted to rotate in similarsockets 3 4, one pair of which is here shown as attached to the footboard of the bedstead. The lower sockets 4: of both davits are closed at the bottom, so as to support the davits from downward movement when in use.
While I have shown the sockets as secured rigidly to the bedstead-posts by screws or the like, it is obvious that they may be otherwise made-such, for instance, as in the form of removable clamps to be attached to an iron bedstead.
suitable material, either cloth or open mesh. As here shown, it has upwardly-extended side members 8, which will prevent a child from rolling out.
. The davits are held in their suspended position and prevented from moving toward each other by means of a spreader-rod consisting of a tubular member 9 and hook ends 10, adapted to engage in eyes 11 on the davits. The hook portions 10 being adjustable in the portion 9 render the spreader-rod adjustable to any width of bedstead or other support upon which the davits may be mounted, and when adjusted the hook portions may be secured by the set-screws 12. When the hammock is notin use, the spreader-rod is to be removed from the eyes 11, so that the horizontally-disposed members of the davits may be turned inward over the footboard of the bedstead, and then the spreader-rod hook portions are to be engaged in eyes 13 on the davits near the sockets 3.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a spreader-rod as consisting of two sections 14 15, hinged together and having their outer ends pivoted in straps 16, which have pivotal connection with the upper ends of the davits. this device is in use, the two sections of the spreader-rod have of course to be moved down to their horizontal position, and whennot in use the central portions may be swung up ward, as indicated in Fig. 2.
While I have shown the device as attached to a bedstead, it is obvious that it maybe at tached to a window or similar casing, so that when not in use it may be swung into the casing in line with the wall.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A hammock sling, comprising davits adapted for swinging connection with a sup= port, eyes on the upper portion of the davits, eyes on the lower portion of the davits, and a spreader adapted for engaging with the upper eyes for holding the davits in their operative position and also for engaging with the lower eyes to hold the davits in their inopera tive position, substantially as specified.
2. A hammock sling, comprising davits adapted to swing on a support, hooks on horizontally-disposed members of the'davits for are swung to their inoperative position, subree'eiving suspensiondevices ofthe hammock, stantiaily as specified.
eyes on the horizontally-disposed portions of the davits, an adjustable spreader-rod having MELVILLE GEORGE hook portions to engage in said eyes, and WVitnesses:
eyes on the lower portions of the said davits T. L. MCOAULIS,. to receive said hook portions'wheu the davits C. 'I.- GEORGE.
