Description

No. 6l7,043. Patented Jan. 3, I899. S. B. PHIFER.
DETACHABLE HINGE.
(Appiication filed Sept. 14. 1898.1
(No Model.)
m g J i I WWW SIMON B. PIIIFER, OF CALIFORNIA, MISSOURI.
DETACHABLE HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 617,043, dated January 3, 1899. Application filed September 14, 1898. Serial No. 690,917. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIMON B. PHIFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at California, in the countyof Moniteau and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Hinges; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in detachable hinges, and more particularly to that class employed on screen, summer, or storm doors, in and out side shutters, or, in fact, any door, shutter, or window where it is desirable to remove the same temporarily from its supporting-frame for any purpose and afterward to replace the same in its original position; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and convenient, as well as durable, device for this purpose.
To this end my invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of this invention as set forth in the claim at the end of the specification.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention in the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hinge as it appears in use, the contiguous portions of the window frame and shutter being shown to better illustrate the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the hinge separated to remove the shutter from the window-frame. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the retaining-bracket, which is permanently secured to the frame.
1 denotes the stationary frame of the door or window, and 2 represents the door or win dow itself.
8 denotes a retainingbracket which may be permanently fixed to the door or window frame by the screws 4 4:. This bracket 3 is formed with a grooved socket 5, the end Wall of which is formed with a parallel recessed edge 6, and its closed end 7 is provided with an integral ear 8 to receive one of the retaining-screws at. In practice I prefer to provide this retain ing-bracket with a second, though reverselyformed, socket 5, hav-inga corresponding par allel recessed edge 6, closed end 7 and inte gral ear 8, so that the socket may be reversed to permit the hinge portion to be so attached that the door or window can be opened to the right or left, as desired.
9 denotes one leaf of the hinge, which is permanently fixed to the door or shutter by the screws 12 12, and 10 represents the other leaf, the outer edge of the face of which is provided with an integral semicircular rib 15,
which is snugly encompassed by the grooved socket 5, so as to firmly hold the hinge-leaf 10 against the door or shutter rail.
The manner of attaching and detaching the door or shutter .will be fully understood by reference to the drawings, and consequently needs no further description.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
In a hinge, the combination with the leaf 10 formed with the rib 13, of the bracket 3 provided with the reversely-formed grooved sock-= ets 5 5, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SIMON B. PHIFER.
