Description
D. SMITH. Muzzle-heading Fire-Arm.
Patented Feb. 21, 1849.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL SMITH, OF SGIPIO, NEW YORK.
ATTACHMENT 0F LOADING-MUZZLES FOR RIFLES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 6,124, dated February 20, 1849.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL SMITH, of the town of Scipio, in the county of Gayuga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Loading Hinge-Muzzle for Cut Rifles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and'exact description.
I construct my barrel and muzzle of the usual and ordinary rifle-barrel metal.
The muzzle (A,) in the accompanying drawing shuts square over the end of the barrel, B, in Nos. 1, 2, and 3. It is attached on one side by a hinge, and while it is shut over the end of the barrel for load ing, is kept in its place by means of said hinge, (a, a, and b, in No. 3) and also by means of one small pin, 0, in No. 3, projecting from the muzzle, and passing into the small orifice therefor at, cl, opposite the hinge. After the rifle is loaded, the muzzle, A, in No. 2, turns back over, or to the side of the barrel, B, and C, and parallel therewith, being secured in its place, in that position by said hinge, and a spring, and
thus forming the muzzle thimble to the ram rod, D.
The hinge above mentioned is represented in the said drawing, in No. 3, at, a, b, c. Itattaches the muzzle to the barrel, and is made by cutting a mortise transversely across the under side of said barrel, about one quarter of an inch from the end of the barrel, and the exact length of the muzzle, into this mortise the side of the muzzle shuts, when turned back, from over the end of the barrel, as in No. 2. There is then cut a small mortise through from the end of the barrel, parallel therewith, to and into the transverse mortise first above mentioned. Into this last mentioned mortise, a lip, 12, No. 3, from the muzzle, is fitted, and a hole bored transversely across the barrel, through the two shoulders, a, a, in No. 3, made at the end of the barrel, by the parallel mortise, and through the lip of the muzzle, and a wire or pivot is passed through, upon which the said muzzle turns, or revolves.
No. 1, in the accompanying drawing represents the improved loading hinge muzzle, shut over the end of the barrel in state for loading. No. 2, represents the said hinge muzzle, thrown back to and over the side of the barrel, and the muzzle, in state for use,
for muzzle thimble for ram rod. N0. 3, represents, the end view of the barrel, and of the hinge muzzle, as seen in No. 2.
The cut crease in the muzzle, is shallower, than in the barrel. The bands between the furrows in'the muzzle are of the same size of the barrel. i
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The hinge attachment, for connecting the muzzle to the barrel.
2. The application of the muzzle to and for the use of the muzzle thimble for the ramrod.
DANIEL SMITH.
