APPARATUS EMPLOYED lN AERATING WATER OR OTHER LIQUIDS IN BOTTLES.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMILE STERNE, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Paris, in the Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means or Apparatus Employed in Aerating Water or other Liquids in Bottles and the Like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, and for which I have made application for a patent in Great Britain, No. 6,824, dated March 21, 1898.
The object of the present invention is an improvement in means or apparatus employed in aerating water and other liquids in bottles and the like, with a view to the prevention of excessive pressure within the bottle and consequent rupture of the latter and injury to the person.
According to my invention I form or attach to the stopper or apparatus employed in aerating liquids in bottles and the like an exter nal air-chamber into which the gas from the capsule or container first passes when liberated from the latter.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a section of a bottle-neck fitted with a stopper or aerating apparatus provided with my improvements, and Figs. 2 and 3 are upper and under side views of part thereof..
a is the neck of a bottle or the like, which with the construction of stopper or aerating apparatus shown is provided with an external screw-thread, onto which the part b of the stopper is screwed; but other suitable arrangements may be employed for fixing the stopper or aerating apparatus to the bottle.
The stopper is formed with an external airchamber b of capacity sufiicient to prevent the gas, when liberated from the capsule or container 0, developing an undue pressure within the bottle. In charging the bottle with Water or other liquid I fill it to within a very short distance from the top of the neck asay half an inch or so-so that no room is left for the entrance of gas within the bottle. Then when the gas is liberated from the capsule or container I shake the bottle Well in order that the gas may as far as possible be absorbed by the liq- 5o threaded internally to receive a disk (:1, provided with openings d to permit of free communication between the bottle and the airchamber b and formed with a central projection 6?, onto which is screwed a flanged cap 61 which retains the perforatingpin d in position and by its flange secures the capsuleholder e from becoming separated from the stopper and at the same time permits of motion of such holder 6 between the flange of the cap 61 and the body of the disk d.
The capsule-holder e is formed with an opening 2 in one side thereof to permit the ready insertion of a capsule and the removal of the latter when discharged, and it has a continuous or ring portion 6 at its lower end to hold the capsule 0 against the-pressure of the perforating-pin 01 In use a capsule c is placed within the holder e. The stopper is then applied to the bottle or the like and is screwed onto the neck thereof. In this operation the flange e of the capsule-holder 6 becomes supported by the seat a at the top of the bottle-neck, a tight joint is made between the stopper and the bottle by the ring 17 compressing a rubber washer f between it and the top of the bottle-neck, and in the final portion of the action of screwing the stopper onto the bottle-neck the pin d is caused to perforate the capsule c.
When it is desired to clean the interior of the air-chamber b, the disk cl can be readily unscrewed from the ring 19 I would here remark that although I have shown my invention applied to a stopper fitted with a capsule-holder and a perforator, as above described, it may be applied to other arrangements of apparatus for holding a capsule and for liberating the gas from the lat ter, whether by means of a valve or by means of dissolution of a mass of soluble or decomposable material filling an aperture in the capsule, as set forth in my application of even date herewith, Serial N 0. 675,959. 7
It will be evident that the air-chamber b may be of other form than that shown in the drawings so long as it has sufficient capacity for the purpose described, and I would further remark that the stopper may be secured to the bottle by other means than that shown.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In apparatus employed in aerating water and other liquids in bottles and the like, the combination with a stopper having a holder for a gas-containing capsule, means for liberating the gas from such capsule, and means for securing the stopper to the bottle-neck, of
