SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,261, dated September 21, 1897. Application filed April 12, 1897- Serial No. 631,819. (llo model.)
To all whom Lt nuw concern.-
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH C. HAASE, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Type-Writer Cabinets, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in type-writer cabinets of that class in which the type-writer while in use is suitably and conveniently supported in position to be operated upon and while not in use is held and suitably supported within the cabinet.
The object of the present invention is to improve the general construction of such class of devices, so as to obtain the maximum simplicity in construction and ease in operation.
With the above primary object and others in view the invention consists of the devices and parts or their equivalents, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved type-writer cabinet with the parts as they appear when the cabinet is closedthat is, when the type-writer is supported within said cabinet. Fig. 2 is a similar sectional view showing the parts adjusted to support the type-writer in position to be operated. Fig. 3 is a front View with the parts adjusted as in Fig. 1, and Fig. i is a fragmentary under side view of the forward end of the movable cover.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates a type-writer cabinet provided with a large recess 6, open at the front of the cabinet and extending back to the rear wall thereof. The top of the recess is also open, except at the rear or back, where it is covered by a top strip 7, which extends forwardly for a short distance and terminates in a raised projection 8, and just back of this projection, on the under side of the strip, is formed a beveled surface 9. i 1 I Extending forwardly from the rear wall of the cabinet and near the lower edge thereof and into the recess 6 for a desired distance is a horizontal platform 10. The opposite side pieces of the recess of the cabinet have secured thereto near their upper edges cleats 11 11.
The numeral 12 indicates the movable supporting-table for the type-writer, which is provided at its rear edge with the upst-andin g flange or strip 13. Pivotally connected at their upper ends to the opposite side edges of this table,near the front edge thereof, arelinks 14 let. The lower ends of these links are pivotally secured to the opposite side pieces of the recess 6. Also connected at their forward ends to medial points of the opposite side edges of the table are other and longer links 15 15. The rear ends of these links are connected to the opposite side pieces of the recess of the cabinet toward the rear of said side pieces. Secured to and depending from the opposite edges of the table, near the rear end of said table, are plates 16 16, said plates havbeveled, as clearly shownin the drawings, so
that the lower edge of the depending strip 19 will rest squarely thereon. The rear end of this cover when in said horizontal position is adapted to rest against the under side of the raised projection 8, and the rear edge of the table is beveled or rounded, as indicated at 20, so as to clear the beveled surface 9 of the top strip 7, whereby the adaptability of the cover assuming a true horizontal position is not interfered with. The numerals 21 21 indicate levers which are pivoted at medial points to the opposite side pieces of the recess 6. Their rear ends are pivotally connected to the opposite side edges of the cover at the rear thereof. The forward ends of these medially-pivoted levers are provided with inwardly-projecting pins 22 22, which pass into the segmental slots of the plates 16.
The numerals 23 23 indicate links which are pivotally connected to the side cleats 11 and also pivotally connected at opposite points of the front edge of the cover. The
front transverse strip 19 of this cover is advisably provided at opposite ends with angular recesses 2i 2A1, in which-are disposed cars 25 25, to which ears the ends of the links 23 are pivoted. These angular recesses provide for setting in the ends of the links 23, so as notto interfere with the closing of the cover in a horizontal position.
Fig. 1 shows the position of the parts when the cabinet is closed or when the cover is adjusted to a horizontal position. The typewriter, as is well understood, is, when the parts are so adjusted, supported upon the table and is entirely within and inclosed in the recesss 6 of the cabinet. Now if it is desired to open the cabinet and raise the movable table and the type -writer supported thereby to a position to operate the typewriter the cover is grasped at its forward edge and swung rearwardly. It swings on the links 23 23 and at the same time turns the levers 21 on their pivots, thepins 22 of said levers riding in the segmental slots of the plates and traveling from the rear ends of said slots toward and to the forward ends thereof. The moment they reach the limit of their forward movement they will act against the ends of the slots and cause an up movement of the rear end of the table, said table moving in an arc of a circle with the pivotal points as centers. XVhen the table reaches almost a horizontal position, the medially-pivoted levers 21 have been turned to such an extent as to cause the inwardly-extending pins 22 thereof to begin a return travel toward the rear ends of the segmental slots of the plates. \Vhen the table has finally reached its horizontal position, it will be seen that its opposite edges will lie be neath the side cleats ll 11 and that the end flange or strip 13 thereof will rest against the inner side of the front strip 19 of the cover. The front of the table is firmly held against dropping down by the links 14: 14, which have been turned sufficiently after the table has been brought to a horizontal position to be in a vertical line with their pivots. When the table is thus brought to a horizontal position, the cover of course is necessarily swung to the posit-ion shown in Fig. 2, it being supported in said position by reason of the engagement of its strip 19 with the end flange 13. The upwardly-extending front piece of the platform 10 serves to entirely cover the space which would otherwise be left between the inner edge of the table and the rear wall of the cabinet when the table is swung inwardly.
Then it is desired to close the cabinet or adjust the parts from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 1, all that is necessary is to grasp the front edge of the cover and swing said cover forwardly. The cover then turns on the links 23 23, and by reason of the uplifting of its rear edge the medially-pivoted levers are turned upon their pivots and the inwardly-extending pins 22 of said levers are caused to travel from the rear ends of the segmental slots toward the front ends thereof, and thereby cause a down movement of the table, turning said table to the inclined position shown in Fig. 1 and the cover to a horizontal position, said cover having its side edges resting on the cleats 11, its front strip 19 on the forward edge of the table, and its rear edge being beneath the raised projection 8.
It will be observed that the medially-pivoted levers are curved somewhat at their rear ends. This formation of the levers has the effect of bringing the table and cover to their different relative adjusted positions at approximately the same time.
From the above description it will be seen that my invention is of an exceedingly simple character and is capable ofbeing operated with the slightest trouble. It dispenses with all complicated mechanism and renders entirely unnecessary the use of weights, which are now commonly employed in type-writer cabinets of this class;
A further important feature of my invention resides in the fact that the table is securely locked in its horizontal position. It will be seen that when said table is inthe position referred to the pins 22 are on a line or approximately a line with the pivots of the medially-pivoted levers 21, and consequently pressure applied to the rear end of the table can have no effect in swinging said table, but it will remain in a locked horizontal position until released by swinging forwardly the cover. It will also be noted that the cover is locked in a horizontal position. By reference to Fig. 1 it will be noticed that the pins 22 when said cover is in the horizontal position are at the ends of the slots 17, and consequently it would be impossible for the cover to swing inwardly by pressure applied at its rear, as the circle described by the pins with the pivots of the medially-pivoted levers as centers is less than the arc of the circles described by the slots 17. It is further locked by reason of the forward end of the table bearing against depending flange 19 of the covers.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. The combination, of a cabinet provided with a recess therein, a swinging table, a plate secured to the edge of the table and having a curved slot therein, a swinging cover, and a medially-pivoted lever connected at one end to'the cover, and having its opposite end provided with a pin or projection extending into the curved slot of the plate.
2. The combination of a cabinet provided with a recess therein, a swinging table, a plate secured to the edge of the table and having a curved slot therein,a swinging cover, and
a medially-pivoted lever connected at one end lever being so disposed that when the table is swung to a horizontal position, and the pin of the lever thereby brought to one end of the slot, said pin will be in a line, or approximately a line, with the pivot, whereby the table is locked in its horizontal position against being swung down by pressure applied at the rear.
