Description

(No Model.)
H. V. DODD. COMBINED CUTTER AND REEL OR SPOOL FOR THREAD.
No. 589,341. Patented Aug. 31,1897
Imam
WZVMW UNITED STATES HENRY VINCENT DODD,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
COMBINED CUTTER AND REEL OR SPOOL FOR THREAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,341, dated August 31, 1897.
Application filed May 3, 1897. Serial No. 634,960. (No model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY VINCENT Donn, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 2 St. Andrews Pavement, Stamford Hill, London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Cutter and Reel or Spool for Thread, of which the following is a specification.
According to this invention a notch or groove, preferably i11olined,is formed in the head of the reel, and a cutting-blade is fixed across it at some distance from the body of the reel. By forcing the thread into this groove a length is cut off, and the end of the thread remaining on the reel is held, so preventing accidental unwinding.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan, of a reel fitted according to this invention. Fig. 3 shows front and edge views of the cutting-blade. Figs. eland 5 show a modification.
a is the notch, and b the cutting-blade. In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5 thread has a longer end left to be taken hold of. In this construction it will be seen that as the notch is formed in the head of the reel and extends across or part way across the head and has a cutter in the face of the head placed across the notch at a suitable distance from the edge of the head there will always be a free end after the severance of the thread, which, however, will always be held in the notch and prevent uncoiling of the thread.
That I claim is The combination with the reel having a notch in its head, of a cutting-blade located in the face of the head and extending across the notch at a suitable distance from the edge of the head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY VINOENT DODD.
