DINNIS CRIMMANS, OF FORT VAYNE, INDIANA.
GARBAG E-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,952, dated February 9, 1897. Application tiled May 28,1896. Serial No. 593,422. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DINNIs ORIMMANS, a citizen of the United States, residingat Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Garbagel3ox,of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to new and useful improvements in garbage-boxes; and it has for its obj ect to provide a box of this character so constructed as to be both air and water tight, whereby the odor from the contents thereof is prevented escaping, and also to embody in the construction of such box improved means for locking the drawer of the same, in order that such drawer may always remain in a convenient position to be emptied.
To this end the invention consists, substantially, in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully illustrated, described, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a garbage-box constructed in accordance with the present invention and illustrated as applied to a fence, a portion of the fence being broken away to show the position of the box therein. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the box removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Similar letters and numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the box proper, which may be of any desired material and formed in any preferred manner. The box has one 0f its ends open, and secured around said open end is a strip 2, by which the box is attached to a fence or other locality where the same is placed.
Disposed within the box 1 and adapted to slide through the open end thereof is a drawer 3, having a lining 4, of zinc or its equivalent, and said drawer at its outer end is provided with a head ,havinga knob G secured thereto, by which the drawer may easily be withdrawn from the box 1.
-The top of the box 1 has a lid 7, hinged as at 8, and secured to said lid is a knob 9, by which the same may be raised when it is desired to empty the garbage or other refuse into the drawer 3. The lid 7 also has at its underside a panel 10, which panel is of the same dimensions as the interior of the drawer 3 and is provided with a beveled end 11, for a purpose to be presently described, said beveled end being adjacent to the hinges 8. The opposite end 12 ofthe panel 10 extends to within a slight distance of the extreme inner end of the lid 7, and this distance is sufficient to form a space adapted to receive the top of the inner end X of the drawer 3 when the lid 7 is in closed position, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, thus locking said drawer and preventing its relnoval from the box 1 until the lid 7 is raised. For elevating said lid from the outside of the fence or other locality where the box is placed a wire 13 or its equivalent is passed therethrough, and has one of its ends secured to the lid 7 and the opposite end projecting on the outside of the fence and into a position so as to be readily grasped.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided a garbage-box which is cheap and easily constructed, and the advantages of the same will be readily seen by those familiar with such devices. When it is desired to empty the drawer 3, the garbage-collector grasps the wire 13 and pulls the same, thereby elevating the lid 7 and releasing the panel 10 from engagement with the inner end X of the drawer 3. By graspingthe knob 6 and drawing upon the same the drawer 3 may be removed from the box 1 and easily emptied .without the necessity of a shovel or other similar implement, the contents being placed directly into a wagon or other collecting-vehicle. Afterreleasing the grasp upon the wire 13 the lid 7 returns to its closed position, as indicated in Fig. 3, and when the drawer 3 is slid into the box 1 its end X contacts with the beveled end 11 of the panel 10, y
and by the continued passage of said drawer the lid 7 is slightly raised. When the end X clears the end12 of the panel 10, the lid 7` will drop to its normally-closed position and the panel 10, as will be seen, will eectually lock the drawer 3 in the box 1. To ll the box, the lid 7 maybe raised by the knob 9 and the refuse matter placed in the drawer 3.
The herein-described box possesses advantages in point of simplicity of construction, and by forming the panel 10 of the same dimensions as the interior of the drawer 3 said panel iits tightly around the edges of the IOO drawer, and by reason of the lining` 4 of the drawer 3 the latter is prevented from leaking. The box as an entirety is both air and water tight, and all Odor from the contents thereof is retained within the same, thus making the box especially desirable. The panel lO aeting as a lock to the drawer 3 is alsoa decided advantage, and from the fact that said drawer may be easily removed and the contents thereof emptied directly into a collecting-vehicle the necessity of the use of a shovel or other implement is entirely overcome.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
In a box of the class described, the combination of a box proper provided with a lid connected to its top, a drawer sliding in said box, a panel secured to said lid and having its inner end beveled to permit the passage of the drawer through the boX, the opposite end of the panel being adapted to normally lie in the path ot' the inner end of said drawer and lock the latter in the box, said panel being of the same dimensions as the interior of the drawer so as to fit tightly around the edges of said drawer and render the box air and water tight, and means for openingthe lid of the box, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my si gnature in the presence of two witnesses.
