AUSTIN E. THAYER, OFPHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHIFFONNIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 575,578, dated January 19, 1897. Application filed July 20, 1896. Serial No. 599,864. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUSTIN E. THAYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chiffonniers andIdo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to moth-proof chiffonniers or chests whereby moths and other insects are excluded therefrom and their destructive effects prevented.
As is well known, certain odors, especially those of cedar wood, have the effect of driving away insects, and have for this reason been employed in the construction of chests for containing clothing. These chests, however, consisted simply of rectangular boxes, in which clothing to be preserved was placed and were exposed to atmospheric influences, so that in course of time the odors were dissipated and the chests lost their virtue as a preventive against the ravages of moths and other insects. It has been attempted to remedy this defect by varnishing the outside of the boxes, so as. to retain the odors, but this in practice has been found unavailing and has proved worthless.
My invention is intended to obviate the above objections; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts here inafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chiffonnier constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig, 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of one 'of the drawers detached. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail View showing the packing-strips.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the chiffonnier, all of the sides of which, except the front, are closed. The said front is provided with a number of horizontal strips 2, forming drawer-openings, and the sides of the chiffonnier on their interior are provided with ways 3, on which the drawers 4, hereinafter described, travel and are supported, so that when said drawers are inserted in the openings the chiftonnier will be air-tight.
The num eral at designates the drawers. The sides, back, and bottom are made of solid odorous wood, objectionable to insects, such, for instance, as cedar, and which are provided with a stationary top 6, to which is hinged by means of hinges 7 a folding top 8, also made of cedar. The front 9 of said drawers is made of an inodorous wood, the ends of which are dovetailed to the sides 10. The said sides at their upper edges are formed with rabbets 12, forming supports for the stationary and hinged covers. Secured to the inner side of the said front 9 is a strip 14, of odorous wood, the upper end of which is flush with the rabbeted upper ends of said sides and serves as a support for the free end of the hinged cover 8. The said stationary and hinged covers consist of rectangular panels, the edges of which fit in grooves in the inner sides of the strips 15, whereby they are made strong and rigid and liability of warping obviated.
In the inner sides of the sides of the chiffonnier are formed grooves 16, and in the up per and lower sides of the horizontal rails or strips 2 are form ed corresponding grooves 17. In these grooves are inserted packing-strips 18, of rubber, felt, or other similar material, with which the edges of the front 9 of the drawer engage when the drawer is closed, thereby making an air-tight joint and preventing the escape of the odor from the exterior of the drawers and confine it within the chifionnier. 1
Having thus fully described'my invention, what I claim is The combination with a chiifonnier provided with drawer-openin gs at the front and formed with transverse grooves in the inner sides of the side walls, the horizontal rails at the front of the chiffonnier formed with horizontal grooves in the upper and lower sides and the flexible and elastic strips located in said grooves, of the closed drawers of insect-proof material provided with a stationary and a hinged cover, and a front fitting in the draweropenings, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUSTIN E. THAYER.
