Description

T. HUCKANS.
Box for Tobacco and Matches.
Patented Aug. 14, 1866.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS HUGKAN S, OF NEW BALTIMORE, NEW YORK.
BOX FOR TOBACCO AND MATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,139. dated August 14, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HUCKANS, of New Baltimore, in the county of Greene and State of New York, hax e invented a new and Improved Tobacco-Box; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of my box when open. Fig. 2 is a front elevation when closed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the box when closed, taken on the plane of the line a; .70, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the plane of the line 3 3 Fig. 3.
' Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention consists in a new article of manufacture, to wit, a box for carrying tobacco having a partition through it with an A shaped base, which latter forms a receptacle for matches, which 'are to be withdrawn from an opening in the front of the box, a slide attached to the cover confining them in the case when the lid is closed.
A designates an oval metallic tobacco-box, having a lid, B, which opens and closes on a hinge connecting it to the box. Through this box there is placed a partition, 0, which may have a rounded top to correspond with concave inner side of the lid, in which case the partition would be a brace to the lid and prevent its being indented, as often occurs.
The base of this partition is of an A shape, as shown partially in Fig. 3. The interipr of this A forms a receptacle, D, for matches, which are to be inserted and drawn or shook out through an opening in the front of the box. The said opening is closed by a door, E, (see Fig. 2,) secured to the lid, so that when the lid is closed the matches are confined'in their receptacle, but when the lid is open the matches may be readily shaken out therefrom.
The partition 0 divides the interior of the box into two separate compartments, a b, one of which is intended for chewing-tobacco and the other for smokingtobacco.
This is a handy and convenient article for gentlemens use, and can be furnished to the market at a small cost.
I will mention that the side of the box is roughened in any suitable way to form a proper surface on which to ignite the matches.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As a new article of manufacture, a tobaccobox, A, divided into two compartments,a b, one for holding smoking and the other for chewing tobacco, and also provided with a match-receptacle, D, substantially as herein described.
