METAL TILING.
Patented Au 25, 1896" WITNESSES INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL R. WVILMOT, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE VVILMOT dz HOBBS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
METAL TILING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,489, dated August 25, 1896.
Application filed March 2 3, 1 8 96.
To. all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL R. WILMo'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in MetalTiling;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a' full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object the production of metallic tiling or flooring or paving plates which may be pressed to shape from sheet metal and are adapted to be used with sand, gravel, cement, or any suitable filling material, the novel feature of my invention being that the plates shall be so shaped that the sides or flanges thereof will lie closely in contact and will brace and support each other and, furthermore, will secure and retain the filling in place, so that it will not wear away in use or be washed out by heavy rains or by throwing water thereon with a hose. I thus insure when a paving or flooring is properly laid with my novel plates that there shall be no tilting of the plates when heavy trucks are run over them, as the plates will brace and support each other and it will be impossible for the filling to escape from under them. I find in practice that floors or pavements laid in this manner will stand until the plates themselves are actually worn through,which requires years of service, while, on the other hand, should repairs be required or should it be necessary to take up any portion of the floor or pavement any number of plates may be removed and replaced without disturbing the others.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view showing a section of completed flooring or paving, the plates being shown as provided with circular depressions which are formed when the plate is stamped out; Fig. 2, a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of a series of plates, showing the man- Serial No. 584,427. No model.)
being shown, as the special filling used is not of the essence of my invention; and Fig. 3 is a plan view showing a plate left perfectly plain upon its upper surface.
1 denotes my novel tiling or paving plates, and 2 flanges formed integral therewith and in the completed plates turned at substantiallyaright angle to the surface of the plates. Square paving-plates may be formed without waste from a square blank, the corners being turned at a right angle to the surface of the plate, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
It will of course be apparent that any style of figure, either ornamental or useful, may be formed in the plate by the dies, as, for example, circular depressions 5, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In practice I ordinarily so shape the dies as to round over and close the corners of the plates, as at 3. This rounding over and .closing the plates at the corners has two important functions, in that it confines the filling and retains it under the plates, so that it cannot waste or be washed out in use, and, furthermore, it leaves depressions 4 in the completed flooring, (see Figs. 1 and 2,) which may be useful for many purposes, as, for example, where it is required to use a ladder they form lodgments for the usual prongs at the base of the ladder.
Having thus described my invention, I clai1n--- A metallic tiling or flooring plate provided with side flanges lying at a right angle there to the corners of said plates being rounded over and closed so as to retain filling in place under the plates and to form slight depressions between the corners of the plates in the completed flooring as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL R. WVILMOT.
