UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DBORAH OVEN, OF VAN YVERT, IOWA.
SKIRT-PROTECTOR.
SlEGIFIGATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 562,738, dated June 23, 1896.
Application led September 30, 1895. Serial No. 564,2L2. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, DEBORAH OWEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Van Wert, in the county of Decatur and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Skirt-Protector, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to avoid the wetting and soiling of ladies garments incident to walking on wet and muddy ground or'pavements.
My invention is an overskirt adapted to be detachably fastened around the waist and also around the ankles of a person and fastened together along the lower edge in such a manner that it will conceal and protect the stockings, dress, and underskirts of the wearer and prevent those garments from coming in contact with any extraneous matter.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view showing the form of the skirt open at the top and partially open at the bottom and a portion of the fabric cut loose and turned inside out. Fig. 2 shows the skirt applied as required to be worn for practical use.
The flexible material of which the shirt A is made is preferably waterproof-gossamer. lt may vary in size as required to fit persons of di'lferent form and stature. The top of the skirt is gathered and fixed to a band or belt B, adapted to be detachably fastened around the waist of a person by means of a button, buckle, or other suitable fastening devices.
The skirt comprises a front and back and side breadths connected with the front and back by sewing their edges together or in any the wearer.
front and bac-k, whereby said gathered parts may be readily secured about the ankles of the wearer. The front and back are also hemmed and provided with complemental fastening devices whereby they maybe secured together between the legs of thewearer. The parts adapted to be fastened around the ankles are necessarily equidistant from the centers of the front and back portions of the skirts.
It is obvious that a waterproof skirt thus constructed and applied will cover and conceal and maintain elevated and protected a ladys dress and underskirts and also cover her stockings as required to keep off moisture and dirt when the wearer is exposed in the rain or going on foot over wet and muddy places.
I claim as my invention-A l. A dress-protector consisting of an overskirt gathered at its sides at the lower portion thereof and provided with fastening devices to secure the said side portions about the ankles of the wearer, and also provided with fastening devices along the lower edge, between the rst-named fastening devices, to secure the saine between the legs of the wearer.
2. A dress-protector for women, consisting of an overskirt comprising a front anda back and side breadth united and the side breadths gathered and hemmed at their bottoms and provided with elastic cords in the hems and fastening devices adapted to secure the gathered side portions around the ankles of a person, and the front and back hemmed and provided with fastening devices whereby they may be secured together between the legs of DEBORAH OWEN.
