COPYING-BOOK ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,882, dated April 21, 1896. Application filed August 10, 1893. Serial No. 482,818. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN W. TWYMAN, of Detroit, in the county of WVayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Copying-Book Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in copying-book attachments in which a plate impervious to moisture is constructed to be fastened at pleasure between any two consecutive leaves of the book to prevent the transmission of moisture from freshly-moistened leaves to those leaves which have been previously copied upon, and at thesame time to afford a smooth and firm foundation for receiving the pressure transmitted from the press to the leaves which rest in proximity to the plate.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plate in position in the book. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the book on the line as w of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a view of the plate and its fastening removed from the book.
The plate is denoted by A. It consists of a thin sheet of some suitable rigid material--- such, for example, as brass, aluminium, vegetable fiber, or other hard material impervious to moisture and sufficiently tenacious to withstand the pressure to which it is liable to be submitted and sufficiently hard to form a smooth substantially unyielding surface for the leaves to be pressed. The plate is preferably somewhat larger than the leaves of the book in which it is to be placed, so that when in position its edge will project a short dis tance beyond the top, bottom, and outer edge of the leaf.
For the purpose of preventing the plate from shifting its position with relation to the leaves between which it is placed, either in handling the book or in submitting it to pres sure, I provide a suitable fastening for holding the inner edge of the plate in position at the back of the book, so that it may be turned about its fastening as the leaves are turned. The particular form of fastening which I have chosen to illustrate my invention consists in providing the plate at its inner edge and at its top and bottom corners with socket-pieces B B, fixed permanently to the corners, with the sockets b I) located in alinement to the rear of the inner edge of the plate, and further providing a removable pintle O, which may be inserted through the sockets b b and on the opposite side of the baclebinding of the leaves from the inner edge of the plate.
In the form of copying-book shown in the accompanying drawings the cover at the back of the book forms an opening between it and the back-binding of the leaves within which the pintle C may be passed in adjusting the plate A in the desired position in the book. WVhen adjusted, the plate A may be turned over on the pintle O as freely as any one of the leaves may be turned and its inner edge being held snugly against the back-binding between two leaves and its outer edges extending beyond the edges of the leaves the moisture in the moistened leaves upon one side of the plate will not be permitted to creep onto the leaves upon the opposite side of the plate and thereby injure the previous copies.
What I claim is-- The combination with a copying-book, of a plate impervious to moisture and having socket-pieces permanently fixed to its corners at the opposite ends of one of its sides and at such a distance apart as to receive the bind ing-strip between them and a removable pintle adapted to enter the socket-pieces and extend along between the binding-strip and cover for securing the plate between the leaves of the book in removable adjustment, substantially as set forth.
