Description

(Ho IIodeL) P. UNSINGER & G. HANNES.
BULB 0R TUBE STRETCHER 0R BXPANDER.
No. 544,268. Patented Aug. 6,1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER UNSINGER AND GEORGE IIANNES, OF FREMONT, OHIO.
BULB OR TUBE'STRETCHER OR EXPANDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,268, dated August 6, 1895. A plication filed February 9, 1895- Serial No. 537,812- (No model.)
To all whom) it may concern.-
Be it known that we, PETER UNSINGER and GEORGE IIANNEs, citizens of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usefullmprovementsin Bulb or Tube Stretchers or Expanders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in forceps, and particularly to those which are used for stretching or expanding bulbs or tubes.
The object of the invention is to produce forceps having jaws so constructed as to enter tubing or apertures in elastic material and be forced apart by pressure on the handles, thereby enlarging the size of the aperture and allowing a ready connection with another tube or object.
A further object of the invention is to provide forceps simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, strong, durable, and thoroughly efficient.
With these and other objects in view, the inventionconsists in the various novel details of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings,
forming part of this specification, wherein like numbers denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which-,-
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of our improved forceps, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the jaws curved.
By reference to the drawings, it will be seen that the forceps are composed of duplicate parts consisting of bodies 1 1, each of which are stamped from a single pieceof metal with lugs or cars 2, apertured to receive the pivotal pin 3. The body'is grooved longitudinally and the lugs of one section fit between the lugs of the oppositelyfaced section, wherein they are held by the pivotal pin above referred to. g
A U-shaped spring 2 (not fully shown) is seated in the grooves, with the loop thereof surrounding the pivotal pin.
The operating ends 4 are slightly rounded, and the opposite walls of the grooves are compressed to form recesses to receive the taper-- ing metallic jaws 5, with the ends 6 bent at right angles thereto. The jaws are held in position by rivets 7, passing through coincident openings in the ends and the jaws, as will be apparent.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 3, the jaws are shown curved. This construction would be especially desirable for many of the uses to which a tool would be subjected.
In view of the foregoing it will be obvious that various changes in the proportions and other details of construction might be resorted to without in any manner evading the spirit of this invention.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Forceps composed of oppositely pivoted bodies provided with lugs or ears, each body being of a single piece of metal grooved 1ongitudinally a pivotal pin fitting in apertures of the lugs or cars, a spring surrounding the pivotal pin with the ends pressing against the handles, seats formed in the extremities, tapering'jaws riveted therein with the free ends extending at right angles thereto, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
