PORTABLE SHOWER BATH.

PORTABLE SHOWER-BATH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,688, dated July 16, 1895.
Application filed January 10, 1895- Serial No. 534,436. (NO model.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. SHACKLE- FORD, a citizen of the United States, and a Bfaths, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to portable showerbaths, and has for its object to'provide a device in which water may be placed and sprayed therefrom under pressure, and which when not in use may be reduced to very small compass for storing or transportation.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line w w.
In the practice of my invention, I construct a collapsible cylindrical body A having the form of a bellows, formed of rubber or other" flexible and waterproof material, having secured to the bottom thereof a metallic base B, provided with an upwardly-projecting an-t nular flange B to form a pan, in which is inserted at one side a tubular outlet-stem a, having a conical spear-shaped head a to receive thereon and retain in place a rubber or other flexible pipe or hose 0, upon the free end of which is an enlarged disk nozzle or head 0' adapted to form a spray or mist. The stem is opened and closed by a tap or faucet a The pan B is supported on legs D, provided with flanges b, which said legs may, if desired, be secured to a base-piece D through the agency of said flanges, as shown, or where it is desired to transport the same said basepiece may be dispensed with. The pan B need not be secured upon said legs, which are suitably joined together, or the same may fold upon the bottom of the pan in any known manner.
Upon the top of the collapsible body or bellows A is secured a circular top or cover E, of any desired rigid material, having a lid 0 hinged therein to permit the entrance of wa ter to the body, provided with a knob c for raising the same and a locking-button c Projecting from each side of the cover E are shoulders or lugs d vertically apertured to slide upon perpendicular rods or standards 6 inserted through the same and resting upon the ground or upon the base-piece D when the same is used, in which case said standards may be removably secured thereto. Beneath the pan B, and resting upon the ground or the base-piece, is a spirit-lamp F having a handle f thereon.
of springs G, the tendency'of which is to contract, secured to the lugs d and detachably by means of hooks g, to loops g upon the base D, from which they are disengaged to fill the body A. I r
The operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
The body A is filled with water and thereby distended, as shown in Fig. 1, and the lid 0 closed by means of the button 0 The faucet a being opened, the contraction of the springs G collapse the body A, or this may be also, where desired, accomplished by pressing with the hand upon the top E, whereupon the pressure of the said top E upon the water forces the same out through the outlet at, the pipe 0, and the spray or shower nozzle 0, whereby all the conveniences of a shower-bath are provided. As the top E is depressed, the shoulders d slide upon the standards 6, thereby guiding the movement of said top, and the operation may be continued until the water in the body has been almost completely exhausted, whereupon the said top E will rest upon the flange B of the pan B. When not in use, the device may be readily folded into small compass for packing, storing, or transportation, by forcing the said top downto the level of the pan, removing the standards e and the pipe 0, and either detaching or folding, as the case may be, the legs D.
. By the use of the spirit-lamp, the water in the body A may be heatedlto any desired temperature and the device similarly operated to spray. The device may also be used in connection with medicated or salt water and is particularly valuable for use in hospitals and the like.
The advantages resultant from the use of the invention will be manifest to all who are conversant with the general class of devices to which the same appertains.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A portable shower bath comprising a bellows-shaped collapsible body having a rigid base suitably supported, and a rigid top provided with a lid for the entrance of Water thereinto, an outlet stem projecting from the base, a flexible pipe or tube mounted thereon, and a spray or shower nozzle secured upon the end of said pipe, substantially as shown and described.
2. A portable shower bath com prising a bellows-shaped flexible waterproof body having a flanged metallic base or pan secured thereto at the bottom and suitably supported, an outlet stem projecting therefrom, a rubber pipe or hose removably secured to said stem, a spray or shower nozzle upon the free end of said hose, a rigid top secured upon the upper end of the body having a lid therein for the entrance of" water thereto, lugs projecting from said top, and standards at either side of a rigid top secured to the upper end of the body, having a lid therein for the entrance of Water thereto, and means for securing said lid, lugs projecting from either side of said top, standards supported at each side of the body and inserted through said lugs, whereby the same slide thereon, and a spirit-lamp supported beneath the base, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two Witnesses, this 5th day of January, 1895.
-\VILLIAM II. SIIACKLEFOR-D.
