No. 532,323. Patented Jan. 8,1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
CHARLES HEISE, OF WINONA, MISSOURI.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,323, dated January 8, 1895.
Application filed October 9, 1894.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES HEISE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winona, in the county of Shannon and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in Car-Couplers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked :hereon, which form a part of this specificaion.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in car couplers and es pecially to the class of hook and catch automatic couplings, in which the uncoupling is effected by mechanism connected to a spring actuated pivoted catch hook, which is made to rock an S-shaped plate disposed transversely across the drawhead, one being provided for each draWhea-d, and so arranged that one end of the S-shaped plate will rest under the rear end of one spring actuated hook, and the hook end of the other catch hook, when the drawheads are brought together and coupled.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists further in the novel .construction, combination and adaptation of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the accompanying claim.
I clearly illustrate my invention in the annexed drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this specification, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my coupler coupled. Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line it}, w of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the spring actuated catch hooks, and Fig. t is an enlarged view of one of the S- shaped plates for uncoupling the hooks.
Reference now being bad to the details of the drawings by letter, A, A, designate the two drawheads secured in any well known way to the ends of two cars.
B, B, are longitudinal recesses and pivoted within which are the catch hooks O, O, which are kept in a substantially horizontal position by means of the springs D bearing against the bottom portion of the recess, and

the under side of the rear portion of the catch hooks. Pivoted, so as to rock transversely across the drawheads as at E, are the S-shaped plates, and are so disposed that when the drawheads are coupled, one end of tion at the side or at the top of the adjoining cars, where the uncoupling can be safely accomplished without the necessity of the operator going between the cars.
. The operation of the invention will be readily understood.
When two opposing draw heads come together, their spring hook catches engage over the cross rods H and the coupling is securely made. When it is desired'to uncouplethe drawheads, by pulling on the chain G, the rear end of the coupling hook, to which the chain is secured, is drawn down striking against one end of the S-shaped plate, thus causing the other end of the said plate, in its rocking movement, to raise and contact with the tip or free end of the other catch hook thus releasing the catch from the rod H and eifecting the uncoupling. Each draw head is equipped similarly with a chain, so that from either car the uncoupling can be made. After the pressure is removed from the springs, the plate resumes its substantially transverse horizontal position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- An improved hook and catch coupler hav- 5 ing in combination with the hooks O, pivoted in longitudinal recesses of the draw heads A, rocking lever X pivoted in a recess and at right angles to the said catch hooks, the rod G secured to the rear end of a hook lever C, a spring D interposed between the said end and the bottom of recess B, which rear end when depressed, is designed to rock the lever X, as and for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES HEISE. Witnesses:
J NO. F. CHURCH, G. Y. JACOBS.
