To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES H. HUMBERT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Waynesborough, in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ooal-Hods; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in combined coal hods and ash sifters which may be used as an ordinary scuttle for containing coal and which may, when desired, be readily transformed into an ash sifter for separating ashes from cinders.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the above character which shall possess superior ad vantages with respectto eiiiciency in use. 7

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of a combined coal hod and ash sifter constructed in accordance with my invention, the hinged bottom being let down and the folding handle extended outward, so as to use the device as an ash sifter. Fig.2 is a central longitudinal section of the same, the handle be ing folded inward and the bottom closed so as to form a coal hod. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the vibrating screen, looking from the under side.

In the said drawings the reference numeral 1 denotes the body of an ordinary. coal hod, having ears 2 at its upper edge with which is connected a bail 3, forming a handlefor carrying the hod. The lower end of the hod is open, and provided or formed with an inwardly extending flange 4, upon which rests a screen 5, preferably consisting of a rim 6, to which is secured a number of crossed wires 7. This screen, however, may consist of a plate of perforated metal, if desired, of a shape and contour corresponding to that of flange 4. A short distance above flange 4, is

a flange 8, secured to the interior of the had body, and between these flanges the screen 1s confined, the flange 4 holding the screen in place when ashes are being sifted and the flange 8 preventing it from falling out when the hod is inverted to dump its contents.

Secured to the wires 7, near the edge of the screen and on the under side thereof are two lugs 9, in which is pivoted a folding handle 10, consisting of a piece of stout wire bent over upon itself at the center forming a loop 12, then twisted forming a shank and the ends finally turned outward in opposite directions, at right angles to the shank, forming arms 13, which serve asthe pivots for the handle.

Hinged to the lower edge of the hod, at one side thereof, is a bottom 14, consisting of a flange or rim 15, a plate or' disk 16 and a downwardly extending rim or flange 17. Secured to flange 14, diametrically opposite the hinge, is a spring catch 18, consisting of a plate of spring metal, the lower end of which is secured to the rim and bent inwardly at its center forming a shoulder 19 and its outer end bent outwardly forminga finger hole 20. A stop 21 is also secured to said flange l5 for limiting the outward movement of the spring catch. A lug 23 is secured to the hod, ust above the lower edge with which the shoulder 19, of the catch engages to hold the bottom in place when closed.

The operation will be readily understood. When used as a coal hod or scuttle, the handle 10, is folded inward resting against the under side of the screen and the hinged bottom closed and held in such position by the spring catch engaging with the lug 23.. It may now be employed as an ordinary coal hod.

To convert the hod into an ash sifter the spring catch is disengaged from the lug, when the hinged bottom will drop down or open. The handle 10 is then unfolded or extended outwardly and by moving the same to and fro the screen will be vibrated and the ashes separated from the cinders.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl 1. In a combined coal hod and ash sifter,

the combination with the hinged bottom, of the vibrating screen provided with a pivoted handle adapted to be folded up under the ICC screen when the bottom is closed and extended outwardly when the bottom is open; substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a combined coal hod and ash sifter, 5 the combination with the body having a lug near its lower edge, the bottom hinged to said body diametrically opposite said lug, the spring catch and stop secured to said bottom, the inwardly extending flange at the lower 10 edge of said body and the flange above said lower edge secured to the interior of said body,

of the vibrating screen confined between said flanges, the lugs secured to the lower side thereof and the folding handle pivoted to said lugs; substantially as described. :5
