ADJ USTABLE BEDSTEAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,959, dated September 11, 1894.

Be it known that I, THOMAS AMARTIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Bedsteads; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings are side elevations of the invention showing the parts in different adjustments. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the invention with parts in horizontal position. Fig.4 is a detail of the adjusting device for the center section. This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in adjustable bedsteads, the object being to provide a bedstead having a flexible frame of such construction and arrangement that the parts thereof may be readily adjusted to difierent positions, or converted into chair form at pleasure, the invention being especially adapted for the use of the sick and invalid.

With this object in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a suitable base or frame upon which my improved bedstead is supported, said base having at each side, and somewhat nearer one end than the other, a vertical post B.

The two side rails of the bedstead are formed each in three sections, a head section 0, a central section 0, and a foot section 0 the central section being pivoted to the posts B by a rod 0. running transversely across underneath the bed. The adjacent faces of the meeting ends of the central and foot sections are oppositely beveled to permit the foot section to be swung downwardly with relation to the central section. connected to the central section and loosely connected with the other two sections by means of elongated slots 1) in said bars, said slots engaging suitable studs or projections 01 on the said sections. Attached to one of the bars 1) adjacent to the slot 6 is a spring rack bar D, having thereon teeth or notches which engage with one of the studs or pro jections d. The said sections are also connected one to another by means of hinges o.

G designates ahead board, having depending leg extensions g which are loosely and detachably attached to the base A by means of hooks g, the board having a pivotal connection at h with the head section. This arrangement permits the legs to be detached from the base when the parts are in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

H designates an adjustable head rest section which is pivotally connected with the head section, and which may be supported at any desired degree of inclination without disturbing. the other sections, by means of pivoted levers H which engage notches h on the under side of the frame of said section H.

,I is an arcuate rack bar which is attached to the central section 0 at one side, the post B having a pivoted dog 2', and spring I pressing said dog into engagement with the teeth of said rack bar.

I is a pivoted foot treadle having a connection with the springs I, and which when depressed, retracts the said springs from the dogs 2', permitting the latter to fall away from the rack, and the central section to be adj usted to different positions. If desired one of these locks may be provided at each side.

J designates a foot board secured to the section 0 and which serves as a foot rest when the parts are in the position shown in the drawings.

K designates an opening in the bottom of the bedstead, underneath the central section, and K is a sliding drawer supported underneath said opening, and designed to contain a commode, or similar receptacle. Above said opening is a corresponding section L of the mattress which is hinged to the frame.

When it is desired to use this opening, the is first removed, and the section L drawer K is pushed downward out of the way. The drawer is then replaced within the commode.

The base is supplied preferably with the usual casters to permit the bedstead to be readily moved.

The mattress and springs are to be formed in sections corresponding to the sections of the bedstead.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In an adjustable bedstead,the combination with the frame formed in three sections, the base, and the posts carried by said base and to which the central of said sections is pivotally connected, of the longitudinal side bars connecting said sections and having means for the adjustment thereof, the foot piece, and the pivoted head piece having leg extensions detachably and loosely connected to said base, substantially as specified.

2. In an adjustable bedstead, the combination ofthe base, the side posts carried thereby, the frame formed in three sections, the central of said sections being pivotally attached to said posts, the longitudinal connecting side bars loosely connected to said sections and adj ustably connected with the head section,

the head piece pivotally connected to said head section, and detachably and loosely connected with the base, the adjustable head rest section pivotally connected to said head section, its supporting levers, and means for adj ustably supporting the central section, substantially as specified.

3. An adjustable bedstead, comprising a frame formed in three sections, a base, and posts carried by said base and to which the central of said sections is pivoted, longitudinal side bars connecting said sections, and having means for the adjustment thereof, a pivoted head piece having leg extensions detachably and loosely connected to the base, a

downwardly opening door in one of said sections, and a drawer supported underneath said door, substantially as specified.
