Be it known that I, J onu STGDDART BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented new and usefulImprovcments in Handles forPans, Tubs, &c., of which i the following is a specification.

handle portion than heretofore; to simplify the manufacture of the article and render it susceptible of being more conveniently and economically produced; and to render it possible to place the wire handles in position at the time the edge of the metal is being formed into a rim by rimming devices or mechanism.

To accomplish all these objects my invention consists in the features of construction, and the combination or arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective viewof a sheet metal dish pan provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View, showing the two pieces of wire properly shaped and connected to form the two handles; and Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the two pieces of wire prior to twisting the extremities together to form the grip bars.

In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein The numeral 1 indicates a sheet metal vessel, which may beadish-pan, or a tub, or any other article. The edge, portion of the vessel or article is provided, as usual, with a rim 2, formed by bending or folding the edge into a tubular shape, for the purpose of inclosing the main body portions of the wires which constitute the handles of the vessel or article. The main body portions 3 and 4 of the wires are bent into approximately semi-circular 'form, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and the end portions are bent upwardly to form the arms or members 5 and 6, and horizontally, as at 7 and 8, Fig. 3, to form the grip-bar, hereinafter explained. The horizontally bent portions 7 and 8 are spirally twisted together, as at 9 and 10, and the extremities of the spirals are coiled respectively upon the portions 7 and 8, as indicated by the numerals l2 and 13. By this construction each handle is furnished with a grip-bar composed of two pieces of wire twisted together, by which means the strength and durability of the handles are materially increased.

The provision of the two independent pieces of wire, 3 and 4, bent and united in the manner described and shown, enables the wires to be placed in position, and the edge of the metal at the same time formed into a rim.

The invention simplifies the construction of rigid wire handles and renders it possible to conveniently and economically manufacture the vessels or articles with the handles firmly secured thereto.

The twisted form of the grip-bars produces an artistic and desirable finish and materially strengthens the handles; and, since these handles are rigid, or immovable, the vessels or articles can be conveniently shipped without liability of the handles being broken off in transportation.

The invention is designed for all sheet metal vessels which it is desired to provide with handles, such as dish-pans, lard-cans, milkcans, rinsing-pans, tubs, and the like.

In the construction of the vessel or article, I prefer to provide the wires 3 and 4 with clips 14 and 15, each composed of a strip of metal folded around one of the wires and riveted to the body of the vessel or article, as at 16 and 17, whereby the handle portions of the wires are materially strengthened and braced at points in juxtaposition to the upwardly bent portions 5 and 6.

I have illustrated the main body portions 3 and 4 of the wires as each composed of a single piece, but I do not confine myself to this particular construction. v
