LABYRINTH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,604, datedMay 2, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FERDINAND GUTH, asubject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Labyrinths, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in that class of buildings known as labyrinths, and which are provided with a series of complicated passages; and the object of my invention is to provide alabyrinth which affords great amusement and numerous novel complications.

The invention consists in a labyrinth con structed with a series of walls forming passages and a number of entrances and one outlet and a series of doors arranged in said passage so as to deceive the person attempting to leave the labyrinth.

The invention also consists in the construction and combination of parts and details which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan-view of my improved labyrinth, and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

The labyrinth is constructed with a series of passages A A arranged in various shapes and formed of sidewalls a, made of planks about five to six feet high. Entrances B B are arranged at one end of the building, and an exit 0 at the opposite end. In the middle of the building a mast D is arranged with a platform E for the attendant, who guides the persons that cannot find their way out of the labyrinth. A platform F for observers is arranged at one side of the building. In some of the passages four doors I) b b b are arranged to turn around a common post H, which doors can swing in either direction, as indicated by the arrows, and serve to confuse the person passing through the labyrinth, as after opening or closing any one door he immediately encounters another. In one of the passages a door K is arranged which swings only in one direction, as indicated by the arrows which door has the same appearance as the sides of the walls forming the passages, so that when a person comes to said doorhe will not know whether he is at the end of the passage or at a door, and only by attempting to open the same will find that it is necessary to open said door in order to come to the outlet, from which this door is located a greater or less distance. The passages can be arranged in different manners and may have greater or less lengths.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A building provided with entrance and exit doors or openings and partitions dividing it into labyrinthian passages, and with a number of doors mounted on a common post arranged at an intersecting point in the passages, said doors having the same appearance as the side walls of the partitions and adapted to swing independently in either direction, substantially as described.

2. A building provided with entrance and exit doors or openings and partitions dividing it into labyrinthian passages, and with a number of doors mounted on a common post arranged at an intersecting point in the passages, said doors having the same appearance as the side walls of the partitions and adapted to swing independently in either direction,

and a door in one or more of the passages adapted to swing in one direction only and having the same appearance as the side walls of said partitions substantially as described.

3. A labyrinth composed of a building divided by partitions into a series of passages, a number of doors mounted on a common post arranged at an intersecting point in some of the passages, said doors having the same appearance as the partitions and adapted to swing independently in either direction, and a raised structure in the center of said building, substantially as described.
