Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. G. SHAVER, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.l
IMPROVEMENT IN ERASES AND BURNISHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 49,558, dated August 22, 1865.
To all whom it' may concern:
Be it known that I, A. G. SHAVER, ot the city and county ot' New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Method ot' Constructing Erasers and Burwnishers; and I do hcreby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents the principal form ot my invention.
The nature ot' my invention consists in constructing an eraser with the blade of any ordinary form, and provided with a metallic or mineral ferrule burnisher instead ot' the ordinary form, composed ot' bone or similar soft material.
That others may understand my invention, I will particularly describe it.
In Fig. l is represented a ferrule so formed that itinaybe used conveniently as a bnrnisher to smooth and polish the surface ot' paper or parchment after an erasure has been made. This f'errule A is formed of steel or other suitable metallic or mineral substance. It is required to be of the utmost hardness, and therefore it is not deemed advisable to construct it ot' any metal but steel, though agate or any similar mineral substance would meet all requirements admirably. In order to adapt-it to be used as a burnisher it will be necessary that it should possess very convex sides protruding considerably above the surface of the handle of the instrument, so that While the said convex surface is resting upon the paper to be burnished and the handle elevated sufficiently to be grasped firmly by the fingers, stillthere will be no danger of contact between the paper and the point or edge ot the blade. This is obviouslya necessaryprecaution, other- Wise there would be constant danger of damage to the surface frm which an erasure had been made. This point is fully illustrated in Fig. l.
I am aware that erasers have been constructed with metallic burnishers, such having been the subject of Letters Patent granted to me; but I am not aware that they have ever been so constructed except the burnisher formed a part of the blade, and in that case the blade was necessarily constructed in a peculiar form different from the common style,
which many prefer, and it is to accommodate this preference in the shape ot" the blade of an eraser that I have devised the bnrnisher which forms the subject ot' this application.
What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
ln combination with the blade and handle of an eraser or desk-knife, a ferrule ot' steel or any equally suitable metallic or mineral substance, constructed substantially as described, so that it may be used as a burnisher7 as set forth.
A. G. SHAVER. Witnesses: l I. A. VooD, GEO. M. DoWNEs.
