Description

UNITED STATES HENRY D. BLAKE, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO P. & F.
PATENT OFFICE.
CORBIN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PADLOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,468, dated August 15, 1865.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Beit known that I, HENRY D. BLAKE, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Padlocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specification.
The present invention consists in transversely dividing thecasing of a padlock, having its link at both of its ends permanently attached thereto, and its link, and at or near the center ofthe same, into two or more sections, hinged t0- gether at their lower ends, upon the interior of which casing, and extending across it, a suitable holding-hook is so hun g and arranged that when the two parts composing the padlock are brought together they will be locked in such a manner as only to be opened with a propershaped key.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvement is represented, Figure 1 being a view of the interior of the padlock with one of its sides removed, and showing its parts locked together; Fig. 2, a plan or view of the top edge of the padlock when locked; Fig. 3, a central transverse vertical section, taken in the plane of the line .t x, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4, a similar view as Fig. l, but with the parts unlocked and partially opened from each other.
a a inv the drawings represent the casing or box ot' the padlock, made of any suitable shape, material, and size, having a link, b, of a semicircular shape secured at both ends to one end of the same. The box a and link b are divided into two parts or sections, c c', at
`f,`is hung, turning upon a pivot, g, of one section of the same, and of sufficient length to extend across the division line or joint of the two parts, interlocking or engaging at its hook end h with a fixed staple, l, of the other part.
m is the key of the padlock, made ot' such a shape that when placed within the key-hole ofthe same and then turningit inthe proper direction it will lift or move the hook-lever sufficiently to cause its hooked-shaped end to be disengaged from the fixed staple Z of the lock, thus allowing the sections of the padlock to be opened from each other, which, as they are again brought together, are locked by the spring-hook'f, as is evident.
In lieu of dividing the link in a straight line across the same I form its joint of an angular shape, as plainly seen in Fig. 2, which, as is manifest, possesses many advantages over a straight joint, amou g which may be mentioned that it is more secure, it being impossible to wrench the link from the staple on which the padlock is hunglor fastened.`
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Dividing a padlock and its link into two parts or sections, hinged at one end and held l and locked together by meansot the springhook f or its equivalent, arranged and operating substantially in the manner described.
H. D. BLAKE.
