1?. KING. COUNTER AND PENCIL 1101mm.-
No. 488,736? Patented Dec. 27, 1892.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FERDINAND KING, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COUNTER AND PENCIL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,736, dated December 27, 1892. Application filed July 5, 1892. Serial No. 438,904. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. FERDINAND KING, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and State of New York, have invented an Improved Counter and Pencil Holder, of which the following is a specification.
In shipping goods it is often advantageous to be able to keep tally, and in different games such as whist, an account is kept of the tricks, and under different circumstances, especially where a pencil is used for other objects, a tally or count is advantageous.
The present invention relates to a pencil holder and counter as a new article of manufacture, the holder being made of a tube adapted to receive the pencil and slotted longitudinally for the reception of a sliding pointer and numbered with a row of numbers in regular order, so that the index can be moved along from one number to another in keeping count, and the holder becomes an extension handle for the pencil when in use, and a point protector when the pencil is reversed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation on an enlarged scale showing the counter and pencil holder, and Fig. 2 is a cross section of the holder at the line so. as. Fig. 1. with the index in position.
The holder A is a thin tube, preferably of metal, and closed at one end advantageously by the block of rubber B, and the other end is open and adapted to receive the pencil which may be entered point first, so that the tube A becomesa point protector, or the other end of the pencil may be entered into this open end of the tube A, so that such tube A becomes an extension handle for the pencil. The tube A is slotted longitudinally and provided with an index 0, which index has a head within the tube A so as to prevent the same being detached, and there is sufficient friction between the tube and the index for holding the index in any position to which it may be moved, and adjacent to the longitudinal slot E there is a row of figures, as shown in Fig. 1, and there may be a greater or less number of these figures than shown on the drawings, and the index 0 can be moved progressively from one figure to the other as desired in keeping count or tally under whatever circumstances the counter may be employed. I usually make a second slot F parallel with the slot E, and a second index 0 in such slot F,so that the two indices that point to ward each other may be used with one row of figures, and this is especially advantageous in keeping count while playing such games as whist, because the one counter can be used in keeping two different counts with one row of figures, thus increasing the convenience of the article.
I claim as my invention.
1. As a new article of manufacture, a tube having an erasive rubber atone end and open at the other end for the reception of a pencil and slotted longitudinally for the reception of a sliding index, there beingarow of figures upon the surface of the tube to form the counter, substantially as set forth.
2. The combined counter and pencil holder, as a new article of manufacture, the same being formed of a metal tube having a block of erasive rubber at one end and open at the other end for the reception of a pencil and having two longitudinal and parallel slots and a row of figures between them, and two indices, one in each slot adapted to being moved lengthwise of the counter, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 30th day of June, A. D. 1892.
FERDINAND KING.
